I guess I'm going to be that guy.
Roberto Orci was attached to many big projects. Some of which I have very fond memories of like Xena and Transformers Prime. But his role in Star Trek is a classic case study of what not to do when you're running a globally recognized franchise. Instead of being insightful and understanding with the fans, he chose to be an arrogant condescending whiner.
One moment he says
and the next,
And it only got worse from there when Orci made the career ending decision by telling Star Trek fans to "FU#* OFF".
As a result, his dream of actually directing Star Trek Beyond collapsed and he was "officially" off the writing team. He still commented on how he was still attached to the film as a producer, but that was it. It was up to JJ Abrams and everyone else to salvage the situation with JJ wisely choosing to not use his "I don't make these movies for Star Trek fans. I make them for movie fans" and hiring folks to write and direct Star Trek Beyond who actually cared.
Despite releasing to positive reviews, the damage was done. Star Trek Beyond failed at the box office and Roberto Orci's career as the 'Go To' guy to write big blockbuster movies never recovered. His writer and producer pal, Alex Kurtzman, continued to fail upwards and eventually wound up in charge of Star Trek. Orci, whether by his choice or a lack of one, did not return to the franchise.
Even if he helped revitalize the franchise after Star Trek Nemesis, he was also instrumental at crippling it again. I'm not afraid to say this after his passing because this was the kind of individual he was professionally. An arrogant, disrespectful individual who indulged at losing his cool. Rest in peace Mr. Orci. I'm still not and never have been a crack user.
