Game The Most Disliked Fifth Season Episode, 2025 Edition

Raptue has the chilling scene in it, where Sisko warns the Bajorans about the coming locusts if they join the Federation, so they must stand alone!

I always enjoyed Emissary stories like this.

We even had a sympathetic Kai Winn in this one.

I am generally annoyed by Neelix but the episode "Once Upon A Time" is a lovely picture of his relationship with Naomi Wildman and shows him as warm and sympathetic.

I'm saving TNG's "Unification I", as even though it's the half of the story without Spock in it I reckon it's the more interesting of the two episodes, with Riker investigating the junkyard while Data stares at Picard on his shelf.

Saving "Blaze of Glory." Because screw it, I liked Eddington. And I was always a Maquis sympathizer. And Sisko's interactions with Eddington downright crackled. And the action was brisk and exciting. And -- awesome way to wrap up some loose ends!

After all the astonishing guests in the previous episode, it was good to get back to our own Lower Deckers for the series finale, LDS: "The New Next Generation". There are so many awesome moments, but Tendi & T'Lynn's "SCIENCE BESTIES!!!" is right up there, as are Freeman's and Ransom's promotions, and that Starbase 80 is the only station suitable for keeping watch near the rift - SB80 is a Lower Decker!!! Oh, and Ma'ah and Malor are back  :klingon: :adore:

I will save Lower Decks' "The New Next Generation"... oh damn, I was too slow.

Okay I will save Discovery's "Erigah". With all the political drama I thought I was watching Deep Space Nine. Then there was that terrible fight scene in the sickbay that broke the spell... but apart from that, this was a genuinely entertaining episode and my favourite of the final season.

Not sure why, but this one's standing out the most:

TNG: "I Borg"

The mindset of "How do we outdo what we just did?" and "Let's do some emo navel gazing!" being the result actually had big potential, which delivers... to a point.

The story is an inversion or opposite of TBOBW. Instead of kidnapping a human, a lost Borg is taken and nursed back to health, and they give him a choice TO stay - which could have led to a big sequel had they gone that route and Hugh is cool enough a creation. (Amazingly, Beverly didn't remove the Borg bits but then we'd have Seven and just about five years earlier, if you go by the airdates.) Instead of making sure the Borg knows where they are, the humans (on paper) say they are going to hide every bit of evidence so they're not found.

Could it have been a lot better? Good grief, by a large margin it should have been better! The treknobabble used is glossed over too frequently when not lopsidedly used, Beverly is given the worst dialogue (when not given some of the best), and it's a big stretch to believe how quickly Picard and Guinan, especially Guinan given how she was in "Q Who?", are quick to turn around. Does the story require a big suspension of disbelief? Hugh'betcha!! *groan*

Plus, this is TNG's episode paying big homage to the TOS trope known as "Have Kirk nag the computer to self-destruct via a logic impasse". One that's brought up but quickly tossed aside. Not because the plan couldn't be the big success it's leading us on to be thanks to good script grooming in ways even Pavlov would be in proud awe of, but because of the unknown variable known as Hugh being genuinely creative as a plot device instead. Besides, all the Borg would quickly notice something was having them go around like a hamster in a cage and stop overanalyzing and it'd be all for nothing. Hugh's emotional "de-ssimilation" had a far more narratively creative result. One that "Descent" would sadly just gloss over, but that's another story.

Her character in "Half a Life" is pretty decent and she could act above the hairdo that would leave some casual viewers or random channel changers giggling out of context.

Guinan "gets" Ro, making for one of many fantastic double-acts in 80s/90s Trek and one I wish we had for longer. 60s Trek had McCoy/Spock, but 80s/90s got to do so much more...

Saving "Hero Worship", because that kid's imitation of Data was pretty funny. Also, the episode took a hard look at trauma, and how it affects kids. Still wonder what happened to Timothy...

Sisko and Ebert would have a field day critiquing this one:

DS9: "Let He Who Is Without Sin..."

I re-read the list thrice before choosing. This one just stands out more positively for me, though I do wonder if I'm forgetting a few VOY episodes. Either way, I still put it over a couple VOY episodes for daring to tackling a big idea instead of running on the same-old tropes. The plot ideas dare to bring up stuff no other episode on the list had and it's very valid. The ball-dropping is the uneven execution of it all, and never mind the silly preachy faff in the breakup ("here's how we break up in shiny happy star trek land") and daring to hit a home run with hardball and ending up doing a whimper-laden bunting by the end.

But it could easily be worse: The plot could have contrived a true bovine plop ending instead of glossing over things. We already had too many big contrivances in "I, Borg" as well as in a bunch of other listed episodes, which is probably why this DS9 entry chose glossing over elements instead of bending the episode to hammer in anything. Ideally, the episode would go all the way in addressing every nuance it brought up, but it didn't take the lamest way out. If we didn't have the Leeta/Bashir scenes, they probably could have had a far tighter and effective episode. But, warts and all, this one isn't as bad as its reputation suggests. At least with discussing people in the Federation reacting to the Dominion and Borg by wanting to revert to more traditional ways, with Worf caught in the middle. There's so much more plot meat there, some of which sadly never got a chance and in a script that easily could have done so.

(It doesn't help that the room's wall panels are repurposed as the So'na ship bridge's wall panels, in a movie that's far more contrived and messy and definitely glosses over Picard's big act of insurrection and changing its mind every 2 seconds as to how many in Starfleet are for this (illogical, daft, nonsensical, dumb, apocryphal, etc) plan.

(Kinda of a good scene notwithstanding, Dax also points out canonically how Worf really hasn't been with the Klingons as long as her symbiont's previous host.)

Thankfully, the Leeta/Bashir stuff couldn't be found. Don't want to drag down my post any more than necessary...

Damn, I was thinking Let He Who is Without Sin... might win this, but I guess not!

I'm going to take another Deep Space Nine story off the board and save "Apocalypse Rising". It might not be The Way of the Warrior, but it's a decent enough follow up and I enjoyed seeing the cast working with Pirate Captain Gul Dukat and playing undercover Klingons, while Odo played detective.

Saving TNG: "Conundrum" Fascinating concept. Loved it the first time I watched it (who the heck is that guy?), and a regular stop in my casual TNG viewing.

Saving "Cause and Effect" next. Despite its repetitive nature, Jonathan Frakes manages to keep each iteration interesting. And Data's final message was just obscure enough to slip by... though it also accentuates that he didn't have (and deserved) 3 pips.
