Property rights and commerce in Trek, some musings

Personally, I just assume that the "there's no money" stuff is a load of crap spouted off by people like Picard who want to come across as morally superior. We see plenty of times in Trek evidence of money, commerce, private property, etc. From Kirk talking about how much Starfleet has invested in Spock and Spock starting to spout off a dollar amount in reply, to Scotty buying a boat, to people buying and selling tribbles, to Beverly buying a bolt of fabric, and on and on. Money clearly does exist in the Trek universe.

Some families might sell holo-simulations of their unique homes, or put a mini-holosuite in every bedroom of a mountain lodge or cottage so each person feels like they have the whole place to themselves, when in reality nobody does.
I wonder if the Federation gets lots of people just living in holosuites, like Jake did for a while in DS9 "It's Only a Paper Moon". Seems like it would be like a drug, might as well move to Talos IV. But there are apparently holosuites all over the place.

If you want to stay on Earth you wait in line for a vineyard to become available or if you cannot wait there are plenty of M class planets to choose and start a vineyard
A Nazi run winery that used minority slave labour?

There are probably mass graves on the property...

Oh no!!!!

"Chateu Picard wine is people! Chateu Picard wine is people!!"

Those other adult children would already be living in their own places. I want to say the population of Earth is smaller than it is now, but I'm not sure that was actually on screen.

How many Earth colonies have we seen?

How much of Earth is still a radioactive wasteland?

Why did they need to raise a new continent from the ocean bed?

I've always wondered how that was supposed to work. Even with the level of technology they have in the 24th century, I can't imagine a way of doing that where it wouldn't be a MASSIVE disruption to ocean life.

And, mind you, by that point there are multiple aquatic-based sentient species in Earth's oceans (e.g., beluga whales, the humpback whale descendants of George and Gracie, etc.). I would think they would have some objections to having an entire area of the ocean shifted in the same way there would be a whole lot of pissed humans if we lowered Australia into the Pacific.

Ok the map from "Family" is a little wonky... it should be centered around the Azores. It didn't show up on the attack map from the end of PICARD season 3, so maybe the Coastal Commission got it in time?

The oceans are a radioactive mash of death and pestilence, because remember at least one side of the eugenics wars were eco terrorists, so playing chicken with the decimation of all sea life was anobvios play.

Was George and Gracie's kid supposed to bang his own mum?

Starfleet had to send more ships into the past, hunting whales to the point of extinction, and then blaming the completely innocent Japanese fishermen.

The scientists would probably take an "Adam and Eve" approach, breeding the whales again to produce the opposite sex of their first baby, then breeding the babies. Further time travel would be inadvisable unless another crisis demands it.

It's ironic in a way, as a parody show ("The Orville") had put some actual thought into how such a society could work, yet the show in which it is parodying had put in almost zero reasoning into such a concept. A season 1 story and in a season 3 story, from what I recall.

Apart from Quark's oversimplified one-liner from DS9, of course.

An economy usually means "get more out of it than what you put in", right? Or is it as simple as that? And what you get out of it could mean any number of things. Ditto for what you put into it.

TNG Up the long Ladder. No such science exists a century after Kirk.

Julian Bashir is evidence to the contrary.

The technology existed. One generation of cloned whales, followed by subsequent natural breeding programs and using generic manipulation to correct birth defects would be easy.

If by the technology existed, you mean infusing 200 dirty drunk illiterate stinking Irishmen "seemingly" from the 1800s into the Maraposian gene-pool, then yes the technology existed.

Enhancing a couple genes to make a super human, is different from changing every gene inside you, while avoiding deformities, space-craziness and serious side effects, so that you can lay with your siblings, and give birth to your own nieces and nephews.

The whales can't get dumber ever generation. If the whales become too dumb to sing, then the Probe comes back and omnicides the planet.

The war (with it's radiation) killed about six percent of the population, a few centuries later I'd say nothing is a radioactive wasteland. Plant some sunflowers.

If the individual can afford to purchase one (probably expensive), and keep it running, then sure.
How does holotechnology affect property values?
It wouldn't have to be a total interactive hologram, maybe just a projection around your property lines.

Purchase with what? (sorry, just busting chops)

To a certain extent, that might be irrelevant to my question. Some properties are expensive because their breathtaking view is in demand. If every property is capable of having a breathtaking view, then what does that do to property values that traditionally have been influenced by breathtaking views?

The same would be true with personal transporters or transporters within easy access like a bus stop. If every location is less than a minute or two from the beach, then how does that affect property values influenced by location?

By the 24th/25th centuries (especially by the 31st) holotechnology is advanced enough that all anyone really physically needs is a booth large enough to stretch out in. Holodecks and holosuites can simulate owning a huge mansion. Everyone could have their own private beach, mountain, pool, tennis court, gardens, etc... True, that requires running the holodeck for hours at a time. In that case and in a Federation that uses money, what one saves on rent or mortgage is shifted to paying for the holodeck power usage.

Perhaps users are conscious of power use and how one's use affects others' ability to access it and other powered services. So you can set a timer (you need not have the lovely scenery hologram on when you're sleeping) and alerts when you go over a certain threshold (which would curtail holoaddiction, as well)
