What the heck is the point of having two timelines?

He should have left the Kelvin timeline, too. We don't know that there wasn't something he was supposed to do in the Prime timeline that he didn't do because he was no longer there to do it.

That doesn't make sense. It's not like someone went back and removed him from a point in the timeline where he'd been before; he was no more "destined" to do something after he left than, say, Kirk would've been destined to do something after he died on Veridian III.

Also, he didn't have the means to leave the Kelvin Timeline. The Jellyfish and its red matter were destroyed, and 23rd-century Starfleet didn't have time travel or the capability of crossing between timelines. Even if they did, Spock wouldn't necessarily have been able to find the Prime timeline.

More to the point, Spock felt an obligation to help the survivors from Vulcan's destruction. They needed him more than anyone in Prime did. And he felt responsible for what happened, because it was his failure to save Romulus (Prime) that drove Nero to take revenge by destroying Vulcan (Kelvin). So of course he wasn't going to abandon the Vulcan refugees. Helping them was what he was "supposed to do."

we're right in the middle of the Battlestar Galactica reboot and all the fan backlash that was happening there. Especially during pre-production of the 2006 movie, the dust wouldn't have settled yet.
Eh? Trek XI (which was a 2009 movie) began pre-production in spring 2006, right around the time BSG's second season was ending and the show was at its height of popularity.

I understand your argument. Mine is just an emotional one. Spock's fate is just such a tragic one (too hard for my poor heart), spending the end of his days feeling responsibility for what happened both for the destruction of Romulus and Kelvin Vulcan when his attempt to save Romulus was heroic.

I suppose he considers it a fair trade - not having to deal with the consequences of his actions in his own reality, he therefore takes responsibility for those of the reality he's stuck in. And someday, perhaps everything will rhyme -Kelvin Spock may later in life become stranded in the Prime reality.
But this statement about "consequences of his actions" makes it sound as if his attempt to save Romulus was a bad thing. Are you thinking he should not have tried to save it? He has been accused of hubris before.

But having to deal with the consequences of a destroyed Vulcan, even if it is not his (which I am not sure he knows), is a very, very bitter pill to swallow. Maybe that's why he dies early; the guilt eats him up.

An interesting idea that Kelvin Spock might become stranded in the Prime reality. Maybe he'll meet Saavik and their child(ren) (per Unification).

What everybody else said: it allowed Abrams & co. to tell their version of the story, contradicting decades of accumulated canon, without pissing off nearly as many fans as they would have with an outright reboot.

BTW: Where the Hell is Heck?

The point is that Spock felt guilty because he tried and failed to save Romulus. Spock's always had an overdeveloped sense of responsibility -- look how far he went on Captain Pike's behalf in "The Menagerie."

It's an awful lot of guilt to bear along with being the cause of Nero's destruction of Vulcan. Like I said, it no doubt contributed to his early death.

23rd-century Starfleet didn't have time travel

Well, actually the reason for an alternate timeline is that you can take characters and other elements of known stories and write your own story without giving a shit about what happened before. so you can change history and everything else. Wether to like it or not is individual opinion and taste...
Generally I enjoyed the Kelvin movies but I didn't like all about it. F.e. I didn't like the destruction of Vulcan...

I don't know if we're supposed to like the destruction of Vulcan. Pretty sure it's supposed to be a somber moment and show what Nero is capable of.
It was meant to be Space 9/11. Then Into Darkness gave us another Space 9/11. Then Picard gave us yet another Space 9/11. And all this after the Xindi gave us our first Space 9/11 in Enterprise.

Please no more Space 9/11's, please.

You do know that because you voiced it out into the Universe, TPTB (The Powers That Be) will find another reason to give you another Space 9/11.
