There's a decent chance more people will see the RLM review than S31 itself

I’m only a few minutes in and already disappointed. This seems to be less of a SECTION 31 review and more of a “all Kurtzman Trek is terrible” hit job.

I know for a fact it’s disingenuous because Mike has said in another video that he’s been watching and enjoying LOWER DECKS. Yet in this video so far he’s claiming he hasn’t watched Trek since DISCO S2.

I was really hoping he would do a video on LOWER DECKS after the show had finished last month. But that he’d rather do a review of SECTION 31 is very disappointing.

They know what butters the bread.

They broke the plate

Disappointing review, even though I like their stuff. They stopped watching DIS after Season 2, so they don't really understand what's going on here. Like, they really stumble over Rachel Garrett, because they presume the Section 31 show is in the TOS era (which is understandable, given other than Garrett and the stardate, there's no real hints here).

Rich hated it a lot more than Mike, who just thought it meh. Rich also had much better criticisms of it as a work of fiction.

RedLetterMedia is also typically very apolitical, but you could tell with the comments from Rich and Mike here the political disagreements between the two of them.

I feel like people sometimes make a distinction between the live action and animated Treks, for a bunch of reasons. I think it's true at least that they feel like they were made by different producers who he basically left alone, so I can see why they're excluded in discussions about Kurtzman's work.

Personally I don't have a clue how hands-on he was with that stuff, or with Strange New Worlds for that matter.

He tends to hire people and then give them free rein

I think the only show Kurtzman was hands on with was Disco. All other shows were basically left to other showrunners who did their own thing. Sometimes different showrunners for one show like PICARD having three independent seasons.

I generally agree with their reviews (and find them enjoyable), because they raise great points about plot logic. The only thing is sometimes Mike can get very picky.

If you watch their recent "Re-View" of Galaxy Quest, where Jack Quaid did it with Mike, I expected him to love the movie. But Mike's nitpicks on it were very specific to how Galaxy Quest wasn't authentic to the Star Trek fan/actor experience. Which, to me, is just really, really nitpicky to the extreme, because it's a comedy with dramatic moments. There's going to be bits where you just have to go with it.

When they reviewed Discovery and The Orville together way back at the start of both shows, they dislike Discovery for making stupid changes, and they disliked The Orville because it was a TNG clone.

It's also a cost-to-benefit ratio as well. Paramount+'s Halo series had about twice the amount of billions of minutes viewed as Discovery (season 5), but Paramount cancelled it because it was too expensive for what they were getting in viewers.

This is absolutely true.

But I was trying to get at, is that there is some point where the # of views matters more than the reviews. At some point, it will recoup the cost.

Now, I don't think this is likely. It was not that good. But I thought the first 45 minutes were pretty good, actually. Annoying mech guy and Fuzz aside.

If it does stay up there a while, it will be because Yeoh is so good, curiosity, and perhaps a bit of the train wreck "it's so bad it's good" Flash Gordon thing.

putting up pre orders for physical and digital copies, after less than a week of release, is not a good sign.

I will have to get it for the sake of completion for my trek library. I mean, i have Star Trek V, Nemesis, Insurrection , Move Along Home, Threshold, etc in my collection.

Ranked at #3 on their SF bestseller list already!!! And #6 in TV and Movie!!

Prodigy is the only Star Trek I don’t have on physical media, and that’s only because I just haven’t gotten around to finishing S2 (I need to get to it).

Part of the reason I have nearly all of Trek on physical media is because I not only want to support that medium, but I also want to support Trek. It’s my hope that one day they’ll get around to remastering DS9 and Voyager, whether that’s through a proper remaster like TNG or carefully upscaling it in a way that looks properly handled.

With SECTION 31… I think I’m gonna pass. I’d buy it just to give away as a gift, but I’m not that cruel.

That's actually pretty common these days. Physical media of theatrical movies go up for pre-order the day after their theatrical release, even the popular ones. Likewise, it isn't unheard of for the physical media of streaming shows to go up for pre-order within a week of the finale airing. Granted, that's less easy to track given not all streaming content goes to physical media.
