Should a Pike show take the Orville approach?

No, it should be its own thing, and not border on fan film/parody.

^^this

Seeing Spock do a little opera song with Quinn Mallory's sister in the roller coaster turbolift was pretty much puke-inducing, even more than Nimoy singing Bilbo Baggins with Erin Gray being one of the go-go dancers (yikes!). That's just one of many reasons why people flocked to "Orville" - for what was a parody at its very start, "Orville" took itself seriously when it needed to and added in gravitas for a more well-rounded show. I was floored by how deftly it handled its tropes. Even the use of camp. Okay, that stupid filler cell phone episode and the other where they remade a TOS episode with the civilization in the asteroid without any innovating were more than lame but one can't see 100% perfection in every single episode...

Deftly? It’s about as deft as a belt-fed mortar. It’s crass and brash and skin deep. I’ve no issue with anyone liking Orville, but deft it ain’t, In my view.

Sister? Rebecca Romijn is married to Jerry O'Connell, who played Quinn Mallory.

The shows current tone is perfect. I'm all for an "Orville" styled comedy (with better pacing than "the Orville," where the slowness tends to ruin punchlines). But they can do that with "Starfleet Academy" or something.

This thread is from 2020. It's not like anybody knew what the "current tone" would be!

I'm kinda looking forward to the next Orville season more than SNW:ack:

I wear my love for Strange New Worlds on my sleeve, so we'll have to disagree there - but, far more importantly, has production of the fourth season been mentioned at any point after Scott Grimes' comment last August? If so, I've missed the news.

I've kinda maintained a cautious optimism since then; things are always in flux, and Grimes might have let the cat out of the bag when the cat was still only partly formed, and far from confirmed.

Here's hoping, though. I can't say I adore The Orville, but I did begin to enjoy it in its second and third seasons.

There was another report in October-ish, but otherwise no. More importantly, both Grimes and the other report both indicated filming would begin January 2025, but here we are nearing the end of January and there's no indication filming has indeed begun.

Thanks, yeah. The whole thing somehow escaped my radar. Well, here's hoping it kicks up eventually.

If they ever do a Pike exploring space on the Enterprise doesn't this sort of make sense? Instead of being a love letter to TNG though like Orville make it a love letter to TOS. It seems like this show could be used to offer something the other Trek shows don't. Picard is the serious adult drama. The Section 31 show sounds like it's going to be Mission Impossible with a edge. Discovery is all about Burnham saving the universe. By doing one of these sort of retro-love letters which I would also put the show Stranger Things as well would fit in well with the Pike character and the Enterprise and all that. Even returning to mostly stand alone stories.

Also I am not saying this has to be what Trek always is. I am saying it's good for variation when put of next to the other stuff they are doing. I assume also at some point we will also get our first Trek comedy and one of these days they will figure out how do Starfleet Academy and give Trek it's first show to deal with growing up and becoming a adult theme.

Why model after a inferior show?

I completely forgot I made this thread. Glad to see Pike did take the STAR TREK:ORVILLE approach. It was a good call.
