Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

I don't want a Legacy TV show, but I'd take a TV movie with the new, younger crew and a cameo by the old.

The plot: what happened to Legion guarding the Transwarp Conduit?

The interesting thing about the reaction to the Unification short is that we once again get a full display of the double standards and hypocrisy That Segment of fandom engage in. Specifically, the people who want pre-2009 Trek to remain "pure and untainted" by the modern stuff. Hell, there are some who even enter threads for new TOS novels in the Lit forum wanting to know if there's any Disco or SNW references in them, as they "cannot in good conscience read them if there are." Yet, Unification seems to have universal support and praise, even from That Segment despite the presence of two characters from Disco, one in a very prominent role.
This post doesn't exactly convey the tone of asking good faith questions, but I'll give it a try.

Star Trek: Vanguard was a book series released between 2005 and 2012 that did a ton to establish TOS Federation / Klingon backstory and featured a pre-Enterprise Dr. M'Benga. That 2022 TOS novel was supposed to tie into said Vanguard series. DISCOVERY / SNW and the book series are effectively unreconcilable. So if the author of the book was required to to maintain continuity with DISCOVERY / SNW, it'd be highly revisionist towards the earlier Vanguard novels, a la all those Star Wars novels that had to redo the Thrawn backstory etc. So I felt like that was a more than reasonable question to ask. Unfortunately I was rather new to this BBS's house style / culture and opened myself up to bad faith sea lioning by some board denizens that derailed the thread from the original topic. Live and learn. There was a recent TOS novel that featured a 21st century Earth portion. Oh it doesn't follow the 21st century Star Trek Earth worldbuilding and instead tries to be "our" present day. Not interested, in and out in five minutes, will vote with my money which Star Trek projects to support and which ones not to. That said, thanks for the reminder about the book. I did end up buying it, but haven't gotten around to reading it yet.

Regarding Unification and tie ins with the Abramsverse and DISCOVERY... I feel the Abramsverse films are bad. But the ultimate fate of the Spock everyone followed from the 1960's onwards through the rest of legacy Trek is tied into them. Yor is just another character from the parallel universe Spock ended up in.

Many people have said they would have far less problems with DISCOVERY / SNW if they hadn't tried to "reinterpret" / reboot the TOS era. The OTOY shorts clearly treat TOS as something that happened, so the only way both TOS and DISCOVERY / SNW could happen would be DISCOVERY / SNW to be an offshoot parallel universe. Which has been argued since 2017.

Though writing this has made me wonder how That Segment would react if Legacy did become a thing, and Michael Burnham appeared in an episode...
It would all depend on how they handled it. If it was Burnham from an alt-future, why not?

Search For Spock must've been hell for you. What with Saavik looking nothing like Kirstie Alley and all.

Having seen the rough workprint of Wrath of Khan at UCLA, I can say that Alley's performance was saved by ADR. Her on-set recorded dialogue is bland and stilted, betraying her clear inexperience as an actor at the time.

While I used to prefer Alley's Saavik, time has taught me to grow to love Robin Curtis in the role over her better acting chops.

When I imagine Saavik, it's always Curtis.

I don't think Alley would've stepped back into the role had the show found a place for her in the 90s, so it feels like she never left. It's like an invisible omni-presence :D

I like Robin Curtis, don't get me wrong, but Saavik to me is Kristie Alley.

Of course, I'm also a pretty huge fan of The Wrath of Khan. It's cliche to say, "TWOK is the best!" but I'm actually someone really, truly means it. There's no comparison between TWOK and any other Star Trek movie, IMO. TVH and FC come close, but they're only runner-ups.

Robin Curtis plays a better Vulcan, but Kristie Alley plays a better half-Vulcan, half-Romulan which is what Saavik was originally intended to be. I like that Kristie Alley brought a little more personality to the role, even though I recognize that Robin Curtis played a better Vulcan. I enjoy Kristie Alley's performance more.

Sorry to go against the grain, but that's my take.

Curtis was quite engaging on the D-Con Chamber a few weeks back. I'd never seen her in "real life" so she was a surprise. Pretty much the opposite of Saavik in every level. Yeah I know ACTING!!!!

You're missing my point intentionally. I liked one peformance better than other, but I still liked both. And I acknowledged that Curtis acted better as a Vulcan even though I preferred Alley's take.

Now distort this into something you know I didn't mean so you can keep this going.

I like Robin Curtis' Saavik, I like Kristie Alley's Saavik a little more. But I like both.

Getting back to Picard, I like all the Rios holograms on La Sirena. I thought they represented different sides of Rios' personality.
