Is it worth upgrading my TNG movie DVDs?

Captain Worf

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
I bought the barebones versions when they first came out, and haven't bothered with the special editions, although I did buy the special editions of the TOS movies. The completist in me wants to upgrade (maybe not for INS), but are the improvements enough to make the films worth re-purchasing? Are there any deleted scenes on the Nemesis SE that aren't on the original?

I don't have the TNG DVDs but my advice is not to waste any more money on standard DVDs, especially if you already own the non-special edition versions. Wait for the Blu-ray discs. If you don't have HDTV then wait until you upgrade to HD.

the special features are mostly well done and I've watched a lot of them more than once. If you're like me and enjoy those kind of documentaries, then I would say go for it provided that a) you get the SE dvds on the cheap b) you don't plan to go the HD route soon. Otherwise Cyrus' advice makes the most sense.

Given the high price of next-gen DVDs of movies in general, the high price of next-gen DVD players in general, the low price of standard-def DVDs of Trek films, and my opinion that none of the TNG-era Trek films is must-see, I say buy the standard-def DVDs if you think you'll enjoy the special features.

If you are like me (I have an older component HD TV, before HDMI) I probably won't buy an HD version of anything until that TV craps out.

I have bought SE versions of films in the past, but then I haven't been able to unload the regular versions on anyone, so I don't do that anymore.

Now if the studios had a buyback program for the regular disk, I would happily buy another, but rebuying the same content with only a little extra? No.

Nowdays, I wait for a version of the DVD that I want to buy. It must have commentary tracks, deleted scenes, additional cuts, or something, or I wait.

I'd be interested in bargain DVDs. Let me know if you are seriousl:vulcan:

Well I don't have any ST duplicates. Let's see, I do have an X-MEN one and the LOTR original ones and Blade Runner - probably a couple of others.

I would say absoutely for the deleted scenes that come with each movie except for First Contact. Insurrcetion has a ton of good ones that don't really add anything and an alternate ending. Pretty much every Nemesis deleted scene NEEDED to be in the film. Generations has an alternate ending and a few other pretty boring deleted scenes. Plus the Ronald D. Moore & Brannon Braga commentaries for GEN and FC are great imo.

Oh and if you were wondering the Nemesis SCE DVD does have about twice as many deleted scenes as the original release (I have both).

What does a component HD TV have to do with it?
Blu ray players (and HD DVD players) send a HD picture over component as well HDMI.
I don't get the reasoning.

As to the main subject.........
I have seen the 2 disc sets as low as $7.99 as various major stores.
So, if you feel that's not too much to pay for features and deleted scenes--go for it.
But, I'm pretty sure the Blu-ray versions will have loads of never before seen extras. that is going to be a major selling point for getting the fans to buy the movies for the 3rd 4th or 7th time!!!

Oh they do? OK that's good. The last time I looked at DVD players, the upscaling DVD players wouldn't upscale to 1080i over component for CSS encrypted DVDs (most commercial DVDs) I had assumed BluRay would limit the quality over an unprotected output as well.

Some of the barebones DVDs (ST V, VI and Generations) aren't anamorphic, which makes them useless for anyone with a widescreen TV. Those are definitely worth upgrading.

Generations IS anamorphic, at least the R2 version is.
R1 isn't.

Given that the pre-Nemesis DVDs all date back to the dark ages of DVD, c. 1999/2000, I definitely thought that they were worth the upgrade. (And were cheaper than they'd been to buy in the first place!) I've managed to unload one of the three bare-bones discs; haven't tried the other two in a while, but with the retail prices of the special editions at only $10, I don't have my hopes up...

Actually the upscaling of standard DVDs DOES require HDMI (for copywrite reasons.) It's the actual blu ray discs that play perfectly fine with component hook-up.
But the upscaling og hidef players blows the old standard 'upscaling' players out of the water!!
On recent movies or movies that have had recent hidef transfers made it can be near HD quality--which after owning & using an older 'upscaling' player i thought was just a bunch of hype.
