S1 vs. S2 vs. S3 (comparing seasons)

So did Kirk and Chakotay die? Don't have to answer it right now but a thought to keep in mind as you rewatch the episodes.
In the mean time, while on the theme of duality, what did you think of TOS "The Enemy Within?" I never saw evil Kirk as the other Kirk. I like how in the end, both men were presented as two sides to one man, both were Captain Kirk.

I think it codifies a principle very common in Trek that good and evil exist, and are present in all. Even in TNG you have a race shedding their dark side resulting in Armus.

So I think they are both Kirk and needed a reintegration to ensure their survival.

I always liked "Skin of Evil," a classic S1 episode back when the show wasn't afraid to do a dark episode.

I like "Skin of Evil", but it was superficially dark. And, the show did other dark episodes as it proceeded. Data snaps a Borg's neck in "Descent, Part One", which was the very end of season six.

Kevin Uxbridge's slaughter of an entire race certainly tops Skin of Evil.

Picard's entire Borg experience is very dark, especially as he starts to come to terms with that violation during Family following BoBW. This by extension makes Hugh's first episode rather bleak because Picard is this close to committing genocide in revenge.

I might even argue the wanton murder of several people in Time's Arrow by the Devidians is dark as well.

As usual, I don't know what AJP is talking about when he alleges the show was much better "way back when." What an odd use of rose-tinted glasses to look back on a past that didn't exist.

How was it superficially dark? Yeah, not as dark as S1. Data snapping the Borg's neck in "Descent," is a dark moment, but the overall episode is not.

It happened off screen, so... not really.

I'll give you that the first three Borg episodes were dark, "Q Who?" and the "Best of Both Worlds" two-parter. The Hugh episode was more drama, not really dark. "Descent, Part II" was pretty dark, but I don't remember Part I being as such.

Haven't seen this in like 30 years, what murders?

You lied. I did not say it was "much better way back when." I said, "...back when the show wasn't afraid to do a dark episode." That does not translate into "much better."

Dark TNG?

“Where Silence Has Lease”, “Q, Who”, “The Survivors”, “Family”, “The Wounded”, “The Drumhead”, “Violations”, “Man of the People”, “Frame of Mind”…

Off the top of my head.

If only someone could not waste my time.
Dude. Bill's right. Rather than asking a thousand questions, you could simply swing by Memory Alpha and have the answer in seconds.

I just did it myself as I haven't watched Time's Arrow in probably 15 years and had no memory of Devidians. 20 seconds later I had my answer. They were the glowing aliens killing people in 19th century San Francisco and making it look like cholera. Done.

"Where Silence Has Lease" (S2) was disturbing, but I wouldn't call it dark.
"Q Who?" (S2) had Q and the Borg, mysterious and intense, but I wouldn't call it dark.
"The Survivors" (S3) had a dark ending, but the overall episode is more in the WTF category.
"Family" (S4) is hardly a dark episode. This is called "drama."
"The Wounded" (S4), this is just a drama about a man who can't move on from war.
"The Drumhead" (S4), since when are courtroom dramas "dark?"
"Violations" (S5), haven't seen this since I was a kid, so no comment.
"Man of the People" (S6), is this the old-Troi episode? I don't think I've ever seen this one.
"Frame of Mind" (S6), I'll give you this one, this is definitely the "Riker must suffer" episode.

Even "if" these were "all" dark episodes, that's what, one or two a year?
Season 1 was frequently dark, maybe not whole episodes, but dark scenes were frequent.
This was caried over into S2 a little bit, and then the show shift away from this in S3 onward toward drama over space is dangerous (compared to S1-2 anyway).

Did it ever occur to you that I'm watching the show (S4-7) for the first time since I was a kid? I'm sorry my excitement over TNG irritates you. Sucks.

Dude, it's not just TNG. How many threads have you started in the last month alone. I get being an excited fan, but Jesus Christ, calm down. Not EVERYTHING needs to be its own thread.
