It'd be one thing if there was near universal acclaim for how GEN ended Kirk's character arc. Instead it's considered one of the legacy portion of the franchise's greatest fails. If Shatner is still available and new technology can make moving being GEN possible, why not, provided there's the right story? But also, as much as I love Shatner as the original Kirk, I’ve never been particularly fond of the idea of bringing him back after the events of Generations. I remember reading Shatner’s novels about that and finding them laughably contrived and stupid, like someone’s juvenile fan fiction. So if this is an attempt at bringing some of that to the screen, I’m just not someone who ever wanted to see that.
People are fans of Star Trek for different reasons. There is the sizable segment of the fanbase that really does treat it like a period piece, are invested in the original portrayal of the characters, and are deeply enmeshed in the lore / mythology. If you want to reinterpret / reimagine / remix Star Trek, why not go forward without altering the existing continuity? Otherwise you'd just end up in a reboot loop. And then more generally … and I promise I’m not trying to look too deep into what is obviously some very well produced fan production … just an observation: I’m always a little taken aback by how a part of fandom is so wowed by faithfully recreating the old look of characters (or ships or sets or props etc.). I’m someone who’s way more comfortable with them casting a new guy as Kirk and tell a new story rather than trying to resurrect how an actor looked 30 years ago. It sometimes feels some fans would be way more comfortable if this was what Star Trek is from now on: Trying to recreate the look of old Trek to a tee instead of having new creative people reinterpret, reimagine and remix what came before.
Are you telling me that second picture isn't Shatner from a documentary?? Crazy, and that's without CG enhancing? It’s insane how they do so much of this in-camera with prosthetics and real-time digital overlays. Some day they need to do a proper demo of how it’s all done. It seems like magic.
Sam is the man.Witwer is astounding. Every once of Witwer's body language screams Shatner.
Yep, I'm pretty certain that was supposed to be the implication there.
Also,
The interview with Robin Curtis seems to imply that this 'Sorak' was supposed to be Saavik and Spock's son.
I am hoping to see the entire DC comic run (with the animated characters) on 1701-A redone with AI.It’s insane how they do so much of this in-camera with prosthetics and real-time digital overlays. Some day they need to do a proper demo of how it’s all done. It seems like magic.
No. That image has the digital overlay in place. Are you telling me that second picture isn't Shatner from a documentary?? Crazy, and that's without CG enhancing?
Give me the first dozen or so issues of Peter David's post Star Trek V run and I am THERE.I am hoping to see the entire DC comic run (with the animated characters) on 1701-A redone with AI.
Damn, of course, even @Tomalak said that and I missed it. Still really, really quite good.No. That image has the digital overlay in place.
I think that might be a tad optimistic, but I wonder if there's a chance they will attempt to remake a TAS episode in "live action" using the digital sets and character doubles.I am hoping to see the entire DC comic run (with the animated characters) on 1701-A redone with AI.
“It's considered one of the legacy portion of the franchise's greatest fails.” Is that so? I can’t say I’ve personally ever viewed it as something particularly bad, let alone “one of the greatest fails”. Mind you, I was a kid when I first saw Generations and I mostly have very fond memories of liking the movie. Assessing it as an adult it’s not my favorite of the bunch, but I never saw the ending as something that needs rectifying. It'd be one thing if there was near universal acclaim for how GEN ended Kirk's character arc. Well, I’m not trying to tell anyone how they should enjoy Trek, just saying what I prefer.People are fans of Star Trek for different reasons. Agreed, he was really good in replicating Shatner’s mannerisms. There was just one shot where I felt he walked a little funky …Witwer is astounding. Every once of Witwer's body language screams Shatner.
Well, I for one am with you on that one. I doesn’t do much for me either, despite being super beautiful to look at. So maybe we’re both dead inside, haha. I do try to be mindful of what this is, though: A glorified fan production and an entirely free gift from Trek fans to Trek fans worldwide. So I just can’t and don’t want to be too hard on it.You know, I wasn't really all that impressed with this when I first saw it a few days ago, but with everyone (and I do mean everyone) on both sides of the aisle in Trek fandom gushing over this and how amazing it is, I decided to give it another crack, and you know what?
My reaction still remains "meh."
I dunno. Everyone seems to love this, so that's nice I guess, but this does nothing for me. It has no emotional resonance with me. Maybe I'm dead inside, maybe I have no soul, but this is just flat and dull to me. Sorry.
