The Difference between TNG and Star Trek Discovery / Short Trek

I stopped Discovery in season 3, so I don't recognise her... and at first I thought it was a parody. But the more I watched, the more legitimate the footage seemed. But surely there's someone not that toxic in Discovery? And if so, what's the context?

As ever, Major Grin left out context in order to make his anti-modern Trek point. When someone first posted that video back when Trouble With Edward originally aired, I was still young and naïve enough to watch Major Grin videos, though I could still recognize what utter horseshit they were. Anyway, here's my rebuttal to the claim the video makes that Captain Lucero was unprofessional:
It really is apples and oranges to compare this situation with that in Hollow Pursuits. In Hollow Pursuits, Barclay is a shy loner having trouble fitting in among the engineering team to an extent that it impacts his job performance, and the backlash he faces from Geordi and Riker as a result of this lead to his reclusive tendencies escape into holodeck fantasies. Picard recognizes this and rather than transfer Barclay off to another ship like so many others have done, decides to try and fix the situation and help Barclay become a productive member of the crew. Though Barclay was socially awkward and not 100% focused on his work, he was generally inoffensive did not cause any trouble.

Edward on the other hand was absorbed in his own research to the extent he didn't contribute to the other tasks the rest of the crew were required to, argued with his captain after she had made her decisions, and then filed reports with Starfleet Command accusing his captain of being stupid just because she disagreed with him. Edward was a legitimate problem for Captain Lucero, as further evidenced when he sets into motion events which lead to the ship's loss. She was within her rights to have him removed from her crew.

So, no, I don't view this as proof of differing cultures. Indeed, were their positions reversed, I think Picard would have dealt with Edward the same way Lucero did and Lucero would deal with Barclay the same way Picard did.

Trouble With Edward is basically a joke episode about a brand new captain trying her best to solve a problem she's had no experience with. The episode's sympathetic toward her, treating Edward like a guy who'd be a struggle for any captain to deal with, but poor Lucero is definitely not a Captain Picard at this point in her career. And she might not ever be, seeing as it ends with her being judged for her decisions.

This was part of the 2nd season of Short Treks (6 episodes) filling the gap between Disco S2 and Picard S1. The captain in this short isn't a Discovery character far as I know. This wasn't mean to be taken so seriously. It was meant to be a comedy, showing someone who clearly was not ready to be captain.

Thanks for the info. Looking into this, I had never heard of Star Trek shorts.
Yeah what's that about?
Oh, I just figured out multi-reply!!!
#1 The Short Treks show is just a companion to Discovery. S1 is 4 shorts filling the gap between Disco S1 and S2. Short Treks S2 is 6 shorts, filling the gap between Disco S2 and PIC S1. The first 9 shorts are all Discovery related. The 10th and final short is a prelude to Picard. Once we had two shows (Disco and Picard), the Shorts became redundant.

#2 Big googly eyes is Dr. Phlox from Enterprise with bulging eyes for comedic effect as an avatar for the YouTube channel Major Grin. Major Grin doesn't like anything post-2005.

It was actually the pandemic that led to the Short Treks ending, as there was no way to afford COVID protocols on their budget, nor was it practical to film them simultaneous with a season of one of the other shows also due to the aforementioned COVID protocols. Had it not been for the pandemic, there would have been a third season, according to Kurtzman.

I imagine the general nebulous state of the streaming TV landscape is the reason we're not getting any more now.

Do you have a source? It strikes me as PR BS. Assuming true, in 2020, we got:
Short Treks S2 ended on Jan. 9.
Picard S1 across January to March.
Lower Decks S1 across August to October.
Discovery S3 across October to January, 2021.

It looks to me like it had less to do with Covid, more to do with prioritizing other productions. What do you think?

You realize all of those live action series were produced before the pandemic started?

No, it was specifically pointed out that COVID protocols made production of short films financially untenable. You countered by pointing out seasons produced before COVID was a thing.
Do you have a source? I still say this sounds like PR BS.
Short Treks were designed for the sole purpose of keeping CBS All Access subscribers subscribed in between seasons of Discovery. They stopped making them because they outlived their purpose.
That's what it looks like, in all honesty. It was to keep people tuned in until they had two shows going.

A third season was announced January 2020 with filming schedule for May and June. They announced a plan to do a music video for one and another to be filmed entirely in black and white. That was postponed indefinitely when everything began shutting down due to the pandemic in March, and by January 2021 Kurtzman announced they were abandoning the Short Treks.
