There are episodes that would need more action than discussions in the conference room

I prefer it to be the other way around. The best episodes were ones with no space battles.

Both can have their drawbacks. The longer TNG ran, the duller the characters became.

Yep. People can say what they want about nuTrek, but at least the characters actually behave more like real people. They laugh. They joke around. They have actual human feelings.

It's rather problematic for me that the most "human" character in TNG ended up being the damn android.

The only time the TNG characters were compelling were the scant few times they got to ad-lib and react naturally on camera. Those moments where Frakes is reacting with real joy or laughter and that sparkle comes to his eyes is magical.

Sadly, those moments are few and far between.
