Starship Museums: why?

Perhaps the Defiant-A was messed up by the Prodigy shenanigans, and it became cost effective (In terms of the 24th Century), Besides it has been 25 years since the end of the Dominion War, the Defiant-A did other things too. If we go by your logic, why even have museum ships, it is not like tactile contact is even a thing in the 24th Century.
I mean, fair enough. It's reasonable to assume the something trashed the ship between then and 2401 where the ship looks nice but isn't space-worthy anymore, at least not for what its designed to do.

Now this had me thinking... If the Ent-D remained in service for an entire year after the brief-return of the Borg, why can't we just have 2 Enterprises cruising around the galaxy, the Ent-D and the Ent-G?

Things in a museum don't necessarily need to be old.

It's a semantics game.

Starfleet isn't a military.

Starfleet is an exploration and scientific organization that can act as a military type organization when there is an extreme need for such.
If Starfleet is not a military, then someone else is: who?

And sometimes when not so extreme.

I agree, Starfleet lost a lot of ships and personel. So I think they could use the Enterprise D if only for cargo hauling

Nobody*

*Starfleet will act in the role that would have otherwise been the responsibility of the military if a military existed despite not being a military.

I don't really understand why it's such a difficult concept.
You can't just not have a military. This is mind numbingly stupid. It's like not having a police force and expecting no crime. If there's no military, Starfleet fills that role when need be, ding ding ding, Starfleet is the UFP military.

Yeah, it doesn't have to be front lines or anything. Heck, you could just keep it parked in orbit over Earth as a "just in case" thing and use it for non-dangerous missions like hauling people/cargo, maybe more tranquil missions like spending a year checking out a planet. If it can go up against the Borg again with literally no one on board except the bridge, why retire it?

I chalk this up to bad writing. Matalas thinks a starship's only good for 10-20 years. Stupid. :cardie:  :brickwall:
Well, to be fair (and I'm no fan of Matalas), he didn't invent that concept in Star Trek. It goes back to Star Trek III:

Admiral Morrow: "I'm sorry Mister Scott, but there will be no refit."
and
Admiral Morrow: "Jim, the Enterprise is 20 years old. We feel her day is over."

Wasn't this a dialogue goof, referencing the Enterprise being 20 years old (1966-84) and not the ship's in-universe age of about 40 years (2245-85)?
