What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

Controversial Opinion: The Romulan separatists had the better solution than Surak.

If I understand correctly, Vulcan chose telepathy l, embraced logic and forsook emotion in accordance to Surak's proposed way of life. Those who rejected this solution left Vulcan in an exodus and migrated to Romulus, thus founding the Romulan civilization.

The Romulans appear to have shunned telepathy, embraced emotions, and curated their passions which is opposite the way of Surak. Yet the Romulan way of life seems more well rounded than the Vulcan way. Sure, the Romulans are warlike conquerors, but that seems more a political and idealogic choice than a lifestyle.

Romulan civilization grew and flourished. Surak's way was not the only way to avoid self annihilation and extinction.

I dunno better, but certainly just as valid. I’m reminded of the Duane/Morwood novel The Romulan Way, where the deep-cover Federation agent on Romulus still supports the Federation and doesn’t turn, but nevertheless
chooses not to be extracted because she’s come to love the Romulans as a people and a culture
.

…I mean sure, a more realistic space-espionage novel would’ve probably had
Starfleet Intelligence ruthlessly assassinate her when it became clear she wasn’t coming home, to prevent a potential security breach
; but it’s not that kind of book.

After watching The Defector, I felt the same way; no reason to desire to ever rewatch it. Once you know the twists, the argument and the outcomes, the political and morality based episodes become boring and pointless.

That's weird, if an episode is good it needs to be revisited occasionally.
Even if you know there's a surprise coming up the journey to that moment is the point.

So you never need to rewatch Voyager since you already know they make it home.

these type of episodes just aren't fun. they aren't enjoyable. an episode can be technically good and tell a deep philosophical story, and still just not be enjoyable.

Maybe she was. Section 31 wasn't a thing at that point. Might have been written differently today.

I have this problem with every episode to an extent, so I only ever go back to episodes as part of a full series rewatch and even then I have to watch them with someone else or else I'll get distracted halfway through and forget to finish them. This is part of the reason I get so frustrated about spoilers, and why I'm so addicted to reaction videos now.

I would never waste my time watching Voyager anyways. I've seen a couple S1 episodes, and the Sulu episode. I'm good.
That's like judging TOS on a couple of season 3 episodes and Assignment: Earth. Okay other people are probably more fond of Flashback than me, but I thought the episode was one of the worst episodes of one of the show's worst seasons.

I rewatch the episodes I enjoy, twists be damned.

Well of course, I'm not saying otherwise. But, some of these NOT fun episodes, are still worth a single watch, and the twist, the dark ending, the whatever-point-its-making, is worth seeing once, but not a fun time to rewatch. I'm still stuck at S04E04 because i have no interest in the next episode, but there are quite a few S1 and S2 episodes that I would watch again, just because I enjoyed them. I like sci fi gimmicks and action adventure romps. This is part of why I am revisiting for the first serious rewatch since first-run, and why I knew I wasn't going to make it much past the best of both worlds....

It wasted its premise and potential. Its retread, boring TNG-lite. Just not interested. It abandoned its set up way too quickly, and featured too many reset buttons.

I am looking forward to revisiting DS9, and finally finishing ENT.

TNG got this much out of me because of Picard S3 and the Target Audience guys, but I think I might be tapping out. I was debating on sticking around until the music changed lol.

Ah, I see.

I do not care about the next episode. I care about seeing the character and what they do next.

For someone who's on a Star Trek fan forum you don't seem to like an awful lot of it

I enjoy TOS, TAS, STC, I-VI, TNG1 and 2, Picard S3, Lower Decks, and the parts of ENT that I have seen. I have watched all of DSC, and enjoyed parts of S1, S2 and S5. Like VOY, I think it wasted a lot of its potential premise(s).

I am a TOS guy first and foremost. Always will be.

That’s entirely true. (Or pull an Operation Crossbow and
have one of the supernumeraries kill her only after our idealistic main leads have left the scene thinking all was well
.) I can’t see Duane and Morwood going quite that dark, though.

Controversial opinion..

Voyager is better than TNG.

:P
VOY is the bottom of the barrel of the Berman era, but it has company in the form of many episodes from other Berman era series.

There's no quota that needs to be met in order to be a Trekker.
