Old Star Trek fans: don't you sometimes get happy just because there are new series?

Let's settle this.

Fans, what is the best Trek film? I'm sure if we have consensus on this consensus on what makes a Trek show great will be easy.

I'll start: for me, it's a tie between 09 and TUC.
While it's hardly flawless (indeed, I think every Trek film has notable flaws): TWoK.

But I assume you're being sardonic and the whole point of asking the question is to establish that there is no real consensus (though I think TWoK might broadly have consensus).

Notably, TWoK not only has shoot-'em-up action to spare, but also includes deeper messages about aging and regrets.

None of the people producing these shows asked the fans if that was what they wanted prior to making them. Nor did the fans give their input about what they wanted to see beforehand to the producers. Because there is no such thing as 'fan consensus,' and there is no such thing as 'we listen to the fans and give them what they want.' That's just a fantasy.
Yet there's also the reality of series flopping because the fans--the very people needed as a base for legacy IPs--found the content lacking or shitty. People can come up with any excuse they choose for certain modern ST series being criticized harshly or cancelled, but it would be intellectually deceitful for anyone to pretend cancellations have absolutely nothing to do with a lack of audience support.

Of course. That's the kind of exercise designed to level the interest / quality field, as if there's no such thing as entries widely considered superior in any franchise, along with the opposite: entries widely believed to be garbage (this is certainly true in the Star Wars and Bond movie franchises).

(though I think TWoK might broadly have consensus)

Undoubtedly. Its been rare to hear anyone say they did / do not believe that about ST films.

Little wonder why so many fans and critics of the period said TWOK "finally got Star Trek right", as it captured the heart, humanity and powerful concepts which were typical of TOS at its best.

Sources go along way in supporting one's argument.
Joking. that's why I put the ;)

But it's sort of true
[Back in 2016], before “Discovery” launched, I had heard that Alex Kurtzman, who’d I worked with on “Fringe,” and Bryan Fuller were making a new show. It was shrouded in secrecy. All I knew was that it was a “Star Trek” series. And then Alex called me and said he needed a little help on it. Could I go in and kind of pull some things together. So I went on the internet and on the internet there were these endless rumors that the show was going to be about Captain Pike and Number One. I’m an old diehard “Star Trek” fan, so I thought that was the greatest thing I ever heard. I’m thinking, “Oh, my God! That’s so exciting!” But then I get there and the show they were making couldn’t have had less to do with Captain Pike and Number One.

So, from that moment on, I began agitating for this show. That’s how the Enterprise ended up at the end of “Discovery”’s second season and how Pike and Spock turned up on that show. It was because all I’d been doing was trying to drive us back to the idea of this show. That’s the show I always wanted to see. Now I guess we’ll see if it’s the show other people want to see.

Agree, save for TWoK being the best. It is a very well put together film, showcasing much of the thematic storytelling that worked well in TOS, and was missing a little in TMP.

But, yes, the point is there is no real consensus of what makes "good Star Trek." People can argue for "good stories" which is fine, but the hang up is rarely about stories but what makes for Star Trek to be real.

You know who it was who said "Star Trek would be shit if we listened to the fans"? Gene Roddenberry Himself.

It did? I mean, yes, it is a popular movie and I enjoyed it, but I am unaware of anything in the movie that fans have been wishing for for "literal decades."

Not unless this is about Wolverine wearing an outfit similar to the comics again.
And Gene Roddenberry got TNG greenlit but he nearly destroyed it in the first two seasons, everybody says TNG got better after Gene was no longer in control.
As for DP3 fans have been wishing for not just the yellow suit but a nod to all the classic stories and they were happy with what they got.
The success DP3 has now is what BvS should have been in 2016.

Yes. Not because I care about the new series, but because new people/new generations (such as myself, even if I didn't get in with the new stuff) are getting into Star Trek and that the fact that new shows are being created shows people still care and ST isn't reserved as "old people shit". I know some people hate the new series / say they 'ruined ST' but even as someone who strongly dislikes what I've seen of the new stuff I can still appreciate the fact that Star Trek stuff is still happening.

This old people stuff is stupid. Do younger people today not watch the First Star wars film because it's for Old people and only watch new stuff from the last 10 years?? Doubtful.
Star Trek since about the mid 90's still looks very modern. Lots of effects and more involved story lines.

The phrase "What? But that was from before I was born!" comes up more often than you'd believe in many (yes, not all) situations. There's almost a fear of trying old media in a lot of them for some strange reason.

That's hilarious to me because most of the youngers I know are watching older media. Just read a review of a first time watching Star Wars, and my daughter turned on "Little House on the Prairie" last night to watch. If there is a fear of watching old media I have yet to encounter it.

It's by no means an indicator of current trends, but I was very surprised that my niece (22) wants a PlayStation 2 instead of one of the newer consoles. She was also quite upset that her dad never kept his Hellraiser collection on video.

Like I said, I doubt it's a trend, but it's cool nonetheless.

Oh, you'd be surprised how many times i've heard members of younger generations flat out reject even the notion of watching older media, based on some generational bias (in favor of anything they believe caters to their own) and the assumption that old mean inferior, which is an absurd belief, yet its not rare to hear that sentiment expressed about older media.

My favorite is TUC but common consensus seems to be TWOK. My letterboxd rankings of the movies are:

TUC
TWOK
TVH
First Contact
Star Trek Beyond
Star Trek (09)
The Final Frontier
Generations
The Motion Picture
The Search For Spock
Nemesis
Insurrection
Into Darkness

I’m 29 (still young I hope ) and I love older shows! I’m currently watching The Golden Girls, which I remember my Grandma loving, on Hulu and it consistently has me in stitches
