Spoilers The Acolyte

Deborah Chow would also be fine by me. I didn't dislike most of Obi-Wan Kenobi, plus she's already had experience with lightsaber duels and Sith Lords.

Didn't Robert Rodriguez get his start shooting films on a shoestring budget? Yeah angry SW fans chased him off the franchise years ago due to his surprisingly clunky action directing in Mando and Boba Fett but maybe they need to bring him back to help keep costs down. It seems like a big problem with Acolyte is they poured gallons of money into it with little return on their investment.

How do you quantify return on investment when there's no box office? This thing of using viewing figures as proxy for box office, though understandable as the obvious thing to latch onto, makes me uneasy.

It's the same nebulous quantity of saying "This is what the fans want." I wasn't aware that was so easily quantifiable.

I trust it not one iota.

Agreed. I think we could a lot more of the Republic. One of the things that drives me nuts about the PT is that it doesn't show us why the Republic should be saved. Just that "Empire equal teh sux, m'kay."

Show me the good it does!
That the point the old republic shouldn't be saved .

It had turned into the weimar republic and so was beyond saving.

Only thing was to burn the entire rotton system down.

Which makes the OT suck so much. It makes the ST inevitable as a repeat of the corruption.

Fuck that.

When George cut out the exposition scene in Padmé's home bedroom we were robbed of the knowledge that the Republic engaged in those kinds of endeavors out of humanitarian concern and a desire to help those in danger, which I imagine were factors that drove teenage Padmé to volunteer for that mission.

Honestly, that is not a loss to me. And I believe such a scene would have deviated from the movie's main narrative. I'm still surprised that so many have complained about Lucas cutting out scenes of Padme's home life, when he didn't bother to do the same for either Leia or Han in the Original Trilogy.

I didn't know that Lucasfilm had plans for a second season of "The Acolyte". It's a pity that Disney had decided not to go through with it anyway. I enjoyed it very much. Oh well.

And which characters are my least favorite in the OT?

It goes a long way

I think of the guy from the prison ship in the first episode who said of Osha "I sensed her darkness". Now at the time I was just getting used to the apparent premise of the show -- ok, there are two characters played by Stenberg, a bad one and a good one, and this is the... good one? Or is it? Are they in fact one and the same? What's going on? But in retrospect, was "I sensed her darkness" foreshadowing?

I don't think it's the "good" and "bad" ones. As children, Osha was drawn to the Jedi and Mia was afraid of them. But in the end, Osha goes with Qimir. There are hints the girls were created by splitting one soul into 2 halves, so maybe both have the potential to be either Light or Dark?

Amandla Stenberg wasn't surprised by the show's cancelation.

“It’s not a huge shock for me,” she said on Instagram Stories. “Of course, I live in the bubble of my own reality but for those who aren’t aware there has been a rampage of vitriol that we have faced since the show was even announced—when it was still just a concept and no one had even seen it. That’s when we started experiencing a rampage of, I would say, hyper-conservative bigotry and vitriol, prejudice, hatred, and hateful language towards us. And you know this really affected me when I first got the job because it’s just not something, even though I anticipated it happening, it’s not something you can fully understand what it feels like until it’s happening to you.”

“It’s not lost on me, how the way that these events have unfolded is also due to the hyper divisiveness of the time that we live in that is driven, I would say at this point, by echo chambers of thought and algorithms that reinforce our biases,” Stenberg continued. “And I think that applies to everybody but I think that in a particular sect of people, it manifests as a lot of fear for what is changing. A lot of hatred for anything that is other. And I would challenge us all and challenge myself to continue questioning what it is that I digest and think critically about what shapes it.”
Nevertheless, Stenberg said she was grateful to have been a part of the experience and to the fans who watched. “It has been an incredible honor and dream for me to be in this universe,” she said. “Even though of course I’m very sad about the show being canceled and I’m sad about us not being able to give people who are invested into it more, I still just feel a lot of levity and joy around the fact that I got to experience it, and that people loved it and that people were so responsive.”
“I pored through a lot of different iterations of fan art and ship art and fan theories and things that were just so beautiful and filled my heart with joy,” she said. “And I just want to let those people know out there who supported us in that way, and supported us vocally in the face of all of the vitriol that we received, and the kind of the targeted attack I would say we received by the alt-right, just that you were deeply loved and appreciated, and it made this job all the worthwhile for me and it made all of the challenging elements of it completely worthwhile for me.”
She also thanked the show’s creator Leslye Headlund. “I just fucking love that bitch,” Stenberg said. “She’s just one of the best people in the world. I think she’s so incredibly talented and unique, and I’ll love her forever, and I will love this experience with her forever.”
And, of course, Stenberg brought it back to the fans. “I also just want to thank everybody who watched it,” she said. “Thank you for being so loving and supportive and excited and nerdy and awesome and I’ll continue to process this for a long time.”

Here's the full Instagram story (since I can't embed it).

I agree with her 100%.

It's unfortunate to see criticism of the show framed as a purely right-wing thing. It came from left-wingers as well. I was shown a video of a group of black men belittling the show. While they could have been Trump voters, I wouldn't exactly bet money on it. Something caused this show to receive a level of vitriol that was not on display for earlier projects. I suspect some people just want SW to die.
