What grade would you give the Marvel Cinematic Universe? (Ever-Changing Question)

The RDJ news was the first piece of information I saw today and I still don’t know what to make of it. It’s great that he’s back in the MCU, it’ll doubtless be good for the franchise generally, as he puts bums on names and will get people like my wife, who has largely switched off from the series since Endgame, to give it another go. He will of course be amazing in the role.

I just can’t help but think that it’s also likely to be confusing for general audiences (and maybe not just them) and after Deadpool v Wolverine people might be a little burned out on seeing MCU actors in multiple roles. I think also that there are many actors out there who could make a great DD.

Having said that, I am very intrigued by the direction that the series now seems to be taking, not least of all that it’s in the hands of the writers and directors of some of my favourite MCU films so far. So I guess it’s a cautious welcome.

The first day was the Deadpool and Wolverine screening.
I just checked the schedule, Marvel is doing nothing on Sunday so we got all we're gonna get.
Ah, damn. I stand corrected.

Again, I'm surprised we didn't get another roadmap, especially with all of the question marks about future projects.

Yup, I agree with this sentiment completely. Cautiously optimistic but also a bit worried about how it'll play out.

My favourite take of the RDJ announcement was this that I saw on Twitter.

"If you mad they got Robert Downey Jr to play Doctor Doom. Just know you lucky they didn’t ask him to just replace Jonathan Majors as Kang"

Yeah there’s teaser footage out.

Reed Ricards is like “Mr Wizard” who hosts a science program for kids

But, huh.....? Did they film some stuff for SDCC then? I honestly thought that the movie itself would start filming the day after SDCC.

Fair points. I just was hoping to get some clarification on the plethora of long-gestating projects.

Oh, same! Absolutely. I just think they're kinda done with the 5 year planning and keeping things a little more tight.

It would be interesting, since it's an alternate universe, to have 60s-sounding tunes that are like familiar ones but a bit off in some way.

It depends. Are the FF from the '60s or in their reality are they from the modern world but with a '60s aesthetic?

If the latter, they should hire Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox to do the music - '60s covers of modern songs.

Apparently they showed a clip at the SDCC panel from Cap 4 of Thunderbolt Ross turning into Red Hulk, which puts to bed the weird theory I read from someone (I think in this thread) that Ross wasn't going to be Red Hulk. Not that I had any doubt about it, but it will be cool (and probably a bit weird) seeing Harrison Ford "Hulk out".

As for Sidewinder, I'm not familiar with the character but I'm sure that Esposito will do a good job.

Ford actually looks like he gives a darn, haven't seen that in years....

I don’t think that’s fair. Say what you want about the last Indy film but it clearly meant a lot to Ford, as could be seen when he got tearful introducing it. He is also clearly having a lot of fun in Shrinking. In fact, I think the last time I saw him phone it in was probably around the time of Firewall.

The trash talk is getting real lol

Anthony Mackie to Tom Holland:

"He said I didn't have a movie. I said, 'Well, you're not 5'11". I got a movie, you're not gonna be 5'11" though! Yes, Tom Holland, fuck you!"

"That's Harrison Ford! Tell Tom Holland I got Harrison Ford!"

I saw Fantastic Four Footage from comic con which was leaked on youtube. So obviously they are already filming stuff. Looks cool. Seems like they are trying to keep things fresh....in a retro way.

I don’t think it’s a full Pivot. I imagine Doom was always planned to appear, I think they just expanded his role.
Come to think of it, you're right. I remember a year or more back reading that Doom was the going to be in Kang Dynasty and that would set him up for Secret Wars.
I suppose we'll see him a little in Fantastic Four also right?

Again, I'm surprised we didn't get another roadmap, especially with all of the question marks about future projects.
D23 is in August. I expect we'll get more then.

Anyways, I'm loving how there's backlash to RDJ coming back as Dr Doom/a Variant but we saw none of this for Jackman coming back as a Logan variant.

Sounds like we've got some good stuff coming up.
The stuff we're hearing about Fantastic Four sounds pretty good. I like the title and the retro-futurisitic '60s setting should be interesting.
Thunderbolts* and Capt. America sound pretty cool. I've never heard of Giancarlo Esposito's character, but he's an great actor so I'm sure he'll be awesome.
The Doctor Doom new was a huge shock, I know there had been rumors about Robert Downey Jr. coming back, but I didn't expect it to actually happen. Despite what I said before, I'm OK now with the Russos coming back, Infinity War and Endgame are two of my favorite movies of all time, and I'm sure Doomsday & Secret Wars will be great too. My biggest issue with Doom is that I just hope he's actually like the Doom in the comics, and not just Tony Stark with a different name and costume. Having him look like Tony should lead to some good drama if the Avengers see him with his mask off.
Am I right in saying that apart from the scrapping of the origjnal Avengers 5 they didn't announce anything new?

Can we consider Armor Wars. Shang-Chi 2, Young Avengers etc. dead and buried now?
I don't see why we should, they just focused on the next movies coming out in the next few years. I'm pretty sure it's been the plan for those to come out after Secret Wars all along, so they probably just don't have enough to be worth announcing yet. If anything, I think this is a situation where no news is good news.
I'm curious how they're going to handle the switch from Kang being the Big Bad to Doom, will they give us some kind of conclusion, even if it's just a quick reference to Doom or the Avengers dealing with him, or just treat Quantumania as the end of his story and ignore the post credits scene with the Council of Kangs.
