News TOMY Star Trek Diecast Ship Replicas

Weird thing so far: the instruction booklet is damp, but the outside of the box is perfectly dry? How does that happen.

Damp from the exhalations of the miniaturized crew trapped inside. Check that bridge module for help us signs pressed against the dome.

Good luck installing the batteries.:)

Word on the street is that the bulky saucer stand isn't necessary for display, despite what the instructions say. As long as you are confident no one is going bump into it, or there is an earthquake, just the lower stand is needed. Basically the lawyers said they had to say to use it all the time, so if it does fall off on just the one stand, no one can complain.
Well, I can verify that this, in fact, is possible. It sits snugly and secure on just the one stand. I supposed if one bumped up against it forcefully it could fall forward but even if it did this thing feels solidly built. Don't think it would be damaged (though I'm not about to test that theory!).

It would definitely get scratched or scuffed if it falls over but yeah it would remain intact I'm sure....

The longer I have this the more I am starting to really like it and appreciate what we got for that $600. The screw caps and seems are barely noticeable from only a few feet away. With the lights on I don't see them at all. The overall detail and "look" of the ship is well worth the price point. I have looked around a long time for a model like this but they were always super expensive (thousands of $$$) or Do-It-Yourself models (I stink at those!). I know Tomy got a lot of negative press and internet media but if they somehow came out to say they are making a Reliant (for around the same $600) or the Enterprise D (for $800-$900) I'd be one of the first to sign up. The price to quality ratio is excellent. Since I'm not super rich, this hits my wallet's sweet spot for what I'd get.

Yeah I doubt they will do this again. At least not in Diecast and $600. Diecast was the reason why I got this. I

Rather than start a new topic, I'll post here that TOMY has announced their TMP (very TMP) Enterprise model is going up for pre-order on August 1 for $699 (though they won't tell you that part until you give them your email address). Pictures, details, and mailing list link here.

The photos do indicate that it's a prototype and not necessarily reflective of the final appearance. I do wish it wasn't tilted forward so much, but the spotlights integrated into the base are a really good touch and seem to look better than other solutions I've seen like thinning the plastic of the model so internal light shines through to fake a spotlight.

The price is fair for what it is compared to the QMX one for thousands.

Question: Will this have the same changes to the final product that the TOS Enterprise had?

Considering the amount of blowback they got for the first one, I'm honestly surprised Tomy bothered to do another Star Trek model.

On some of the close up shots, you can really see how they attempted (and largely succeeded) at reproducing the pearlescent aztecking on the hull. It’s particularly evident on the oblique angle of the 2H. I agree that they should have had less of a downward slant on the stand, but yeah, it’s a prototype and it is incredible for what it is.

So, I’ve spent many hours pouring over this design for the past 45 years since I first saw it in a small Pennsylvania theater in the Christmas of ‘79 and this one just feels… well… I don’t want to say “off”, but some things about it, particularly some shapes and proportions, don’t feel quite right to me. The PH and nacelles should be in alignment with each other horizontally, and it looks like there’s some sagging on both (again, prototype, I get it), but there are other oddities. The PH seems a bit flat on the top and bottom, where it comes up to the bridge and goes down to the lower navigational dome. Like it should be thicker or ... something. The tapered tail ends of the nacelles also don’t seem quite right, as if there’s too much tapering off and flattening of the engines there, when there should be a more gentle transition from roundness to straightness at the end. The Polar Lights model did it perfectly, and I somehow had hoped that maybe they could have licensed that model to make this beefier version, especially since this one is 1:350 scale as well. Instead, it looks like they started from scratch and didn’t quite get the details right.

I’m honestly surprised nobody took an officially-sanctioned 3D scan of the original before it got sold off at auction (or even after, with permission from whomever now owns it) that Paramount could have licensed out to companies like this who wanted to make faithful copies.

I dunno…. It’s definitely a noble effort. Just don’t know if it’s worth the price tag for me.

I also think the paint on top of the strongback is both way too prominent and too blue for the TMP version of the model.

I’m feeling like a Star Trek idiot now.

Which part is the strongback?

Seriously, I thought I knew this stuff and I clearly know nothing beyond ‘saucer section’, ‘nacelle’ and ‘pylon’.
