Did They Jump Too Far?

It's still confusing that some species in DISCO look "classic" (like the Vulcans) but other species look different (like the Klingons or the Ferengi). So I don't really get the point.
Come on grandad, kids today want the Klingons to look and sound like they've got half a bag of cotton wool in their cheeks.:p

Blasphemy. Everyone knows true entertainment means rigidly adhering to that which was established previously. Except for when TMP changed the Klingons, which is okay because fans who began watching TNG are weirded out by the human looking Klingons of TOS an explanation was provided twenty-five years after the fact.

;)
Yeah!

These arbitrary changes back then are totally fine while these new arbitrary changes are completely unacceptable!

I trust you know why!

Arbitrary changes are fine when a: they happened years before I was born and b: were fixed in dialogue shortly after I became a fan so there isn't even an issue for me to complain about. Or c: when the original makeup only appeared in one Next Gen episode I didn't even like and got like 6.4 on IMDb.

So, arbitrary.

Sorry, TMP was a massive change, and TSFS redid it again.

So, yeah, it's not new and it's arbitrary to me to say, "this change is fine but this not "

If I was old enough to be a Star Trek fan in 1979 and the internet was old enough for me to be using it, I would certainly have been bitching about the change in Klingon makeup. But now there's no point in me complaining about it as it's been acknowledged and explained.

If they explain Discovery's reworked Klingons and rubbish Ferengi in 20 years I'll certainly rethink my opinions about them, but that hasn't happened yet.

The change in Romulan makeup was weird as well, I wasn't keen on that. But it's also been explained, so I have nothing to complain about there either. The change in Bajoran and Trill makeup... eh, the shows get a free pass for an alien's first appearance or two, while they're still working it out. Cardassians looked a bit ropey the first time around as well.

Some changes are fine, some are not.

I don't get this.

Anyway, as customers we have the right to like or dislike things and to be critical. Everybody has different preferences ;)
If people just said "I don't like it." I'm fine with it. It's the "Trek has always been consistent until the day the Discovery nation attacked."

OK but Discovery is actually the only Star Trek show I don't like.
About the look of species, I also don't like the new Gorn in SNW although I like the show.
Well, I didn't like the look of the Gorn in TOS either, it was a cheap costume ;)

Oh man, the Gorn are even worse. I was kind of rolling with Discovery's Klingons, I guess I had to in order to keep watching, but SNW's Gorn can just go away. I can't take the episodes they're in seriously at all.

Your first Trek show you don't like is always hard.

I don't care about the Gorn, one way or the other. We can't assume one person represents a whole species or people.

Imagine if aliens landed at a basketball practice and reported to their leaders "humans are all these long beings who throw balls all day."

Of course I don't mean it in a racist way...
No, of course not.

But, the tendency with Star Trek (both writers and fans) is that one presentation is the only way an alien race can look. Just look at the bowl cut used for Romulans and Vulcans across the years, or the Klingons using only the leather biker look for years on end. Basically a monoculture.

Now, I'll grant that writing multi faceted aliens is very difficult so the shortcuts are easier. But, with the Gorn we literally only have one datapoint, and a bunch of assumptions.

With Klingons, well, we have a built in reason-they were infected by an augment virus and they were going to use cosmetic surgery to potentially fix it. It's easy to guess (I would think, any way) that they would attempt other remedies with this ridiculous virus, from genetic engineering, to inbreeding to keep the bloodlines pure, or other surgical interventions.

So, with the Gorn we too little information to judge SNW, and with the Klingons the only issue is that some of the prosthetics impacting actors facial movements.
