I really enjoyed all seasons of Picard--even season 2. Possibly I enjoyed season 2 a little more than season 3. I loved seeing the old gang back together. I loved the throwback references to past episodes. I really enjoyed the story. The one piece I didn't like was who the Big Bad turned out to be because I just feel like it has been an overused Big Bad. That didn't stop me from rolling with it and enjoying the show.

Actually that's what worries me. 12 Monkeys was fairly good, but given a job in a long-running franchise, he prioritized fanservice and continuity porn over everything else. I'm afraid he'll do the same with a Marvel series.

I hated PIC S3 and I'm not thrilled with this news, either. However, in the end it probably isn't that big of a deal.

The bottom line is Vision/Marvel is not Picard/TNG. There is no band to get back together. There is no decades old fanbase yearning to see the Vision of thirty years ago. There is no MCU equivalent to the Borg/Lore/Changelings that could make me roll my eyes as hard as PIC S3 did. And there's not really even any pre-existing ensemble whose characterization could be ruined beyond Vision himself (who's only actually appeared 4 times so far anyway and isn't really himself anymore to begin with). There's not even any need for him to create any crappy new characters like Shaw and Jack, since any necessary supporting role can most likely be lifted straight out of the comics.

Worst thing he could possibly do is somehow destroy Wanda's characterization - but Wanda's dead, so probably not even in this.

It'll be fine.

Wanda's not dead
Indeed. However, I do think the chances of her appearing (in the present, at least) are about 50/50. Well, at least when Schaeffer was in charge since she she appeared to have an idea of how she was going to do the show. We'll see if that aligns with Matalas' thoughts on it.

All the news stories I've seen about this the last few days have just called it Vision, so it looks like they're dropping the "Quest" part of the title.

Variety didn't refer to the show by any title (just "the Vision show") and since they broke the story, I think it's safe to say we don't know the title of the show at all and everyone else is just making shit up to fill in the gaps.

That's probably a good idea, since a vision quest is part of a number of Native American religious traditions and using the term in this context could be seen as cultural appropriation.

well, it's an English language umbrella term for a number of different Native rites of passage. So the question would be, what culture is it appropriating?

Which I did, in fact, say in my post -- "part of a number of Native American religious traditions."

Strange question. Surely if it appropriates from multiple marginalized cultures, that's even better reason to change it. Although it really shouldn't matter whether it's one or many; the goal is to outgrow the old assumption that it's okay to disregard a group's rights or opinions if that group is small enough.

But of course, I'm just speculating that that was their reason, so it's not worth making an issue out of. If that was their reason, or not, maybe some producer will say so in an interview. Either way, it's not up to any of us here to decide.

I don't know if it is appropriating--unless the "vision quest" in the story appropriates culture. More likely it would fall into the same category as "spirit animal" which is considered offensive when used out of an Indigenous context.

Exactly. For a series title, it's safer to go with something more neutral.
