How do/did you feel about the return of the Enterprise-D?

It was nostalgia done right.

I had caught wind of potential spoilers weeks in advance of the episode, but wasn't entirely convinced by them. Not being US based, I couldn't have watched the episode when it was immediately released, so I happened upon the moment on YouTube before the forums lit up.

It was impressive, especially the reactions from the crew. Picard even seemed to regain some strength and vigour in that moment, whereas I was used to him seeming frail and downbeat. It was a total transformation in a very short space of time. Everyone was assembled, and it was just perfect.

I'm aware that Liz Kloczkowski and Dave Blass made some minute changes to the bridge, but I'm glad that there wasn't any temptation to visually update the design, as it would've lost a lot in the moment that the bridge lights came on.

I don't think that Star Trek could pull this off again, as no other ship (save the OG Enterprise) would hit the same. YMMV.
Voyager, Defiant, the NX-01 would be lovely to see in the same fashion, but it would be a case of diminishing returns after a while, but again...YMMV.

No. Nostalgia done right were the Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials bringing David Tennant and Catherine Tate back last fall. This was fanwank and memberberries gone extreme.
Although, thinking about it, how was using an old and familiar vessel "memberberries gone extreme"? I can see why people might think that of PIC S3 in general, but surely not one 4 minute scene at the end of episode 9?
I personally thought the 60th far surpassed the 50th. Wasn't a fan of Day of the Doctor, truth be told.
Meh, it had its moments but felt like more of a celebration of series 4 than anything else.

You actually don't see how having the TNG cast back on a faithful recreation of their bridge is memberberries gone extreme?
Not really. If Picard had his Ressikan flute while cradling his Kurlan Naiskos, Riker had his Trombone, Deanna had a nice big serving of fudge sundae, La Forge had his Holo-Leah Brahms doing a lap dance, Worf was glugging down prune juice while swinging his batleth...and bearing in mind they're taking on the Borg, Daimon Bok AND Nagilum at this point....then that would be extreme. Definitely.

As It stands, the whole scene was just a touch too sentimental for the situation they were in, but I couldn't call it extreme.

Just didn't care. Did nothing for me. I can watch the Enterprise-D anytime I want on disc/streaming/OTA.

When LOWER DECKS or SNW does it, it's good. But when PS3 does it, it's bad, because the "wrong" fans liked it.

What about when DSC S5 brings in the ISS *spoiler*, when it could've been any other ship?

I do actually think that post-2017 Trek's original sin was nostalgia-bait, but thats a topic for another day. A certain someone just had to be related Spock.;)

They don't hold a candle to the 50th. I will not be convinced otherwise.
I agree but because the 50th had so much variety. The Day of the Doctor, The Night of the Doctor, The Fiveish Doctors Reboot, and An Adventure in Time and Space all had these great ideas that stood on their own in different styles. Whereas 60th just felt to me like a continuation of 2009 specials and Season 4 and variations on existing RTD's stories.

Hardly. No one's actually against nostalgia, it just has to be applied correctly. Lower Decks and SNW treat the nostalgia as an appetizer while providing a proper meal with the episode's storyline. Picard S3's overreliance on nostalgia is basically just an entire meal consisting of nothing but appetizers.

But beyond that, is there an objectively right way to do nostalgia? I think that's what we're really discussing.
I don't know about objective, but my biggest thing will always be about characters and how it serves the story. If the scene stops the story dead to revel in its nostalgia I'll struggle with it because it feels fake, that it's playing on the emotional state of audience members rather than inviting them in to genuinely participate.

And being emotional I don't think I could say it's objective.

Yes, something like this is never happening again. DS9, VOY, and ENT don't have the same clout.

There's no objective way to do any type of entertainment. There are some people who'll try to make it sound like there is, but there really isn't.
