Your memories of the Nintendo Entertainment System (25 years old!!!)

Re: Your memories of the Nintendo Entertainment System (25 years old!!

My strongest memory is of sore thumbs and a persistent callous on my right thumb tip that stayed around into the SNES era.

And Blades of Steel! So much fun!

Did anyone else play the Rocketeer game? It was never that popular, but I owned it and it was one of my favorite NES games. It had a variety weapons and the jet pack was one of the coolest devices in an NES game.

Re: Your memories of the Nintendo Entertainment System (25 years old!!

I just picked up a Wii this week and immediately downloaded a couple of the classic NES games. Back in the day I had:

Mike Tyson's Punch Out
Pro Wrestling
Excite Bike
Ikari Warriors 2
Kung Fu
Final Fantasy (original)
Tecmo Bowl
Double Dribble
Deadly Towers
Double Dragon
Super Dodge Ball (<--- all time favorite NES game)
Duck Tales
Super Mario Bros. 2

Good times and great memories.

I played it. I can't say I liked it a whole lot but it was a serviceable platformer.

Re: Your memories of the Nintendo Entertainment System (25 years old!!

I still play NES games all the time today, so it's hard to separate my memories for it from my experiences with it today.

I'd say my greatest memories were of me playing through Dragon Quest I and IV as a little kid and keeping the NES on for several nights straight until I finally beat Super Mario Bros. 3. I'm not sure if I did actually beat Mario 3, but I like to remember it as if I did.

I don't know if I was the only one who had this awful game...

I use to play the hell out of this game.

I think that's accurate, but nostalgia clouds the game's problems for me.

Right now I'm playing the second quest on Legend of Zelda, which I've never done before. It is so hard!

I never played it as a kid, but a friend and I played through it together about two years ago. It's a decent little platformer if you're looking for a challenge and can put up with a few flaws.

I remember my friends trying to convince me that this godawful game was actually good:

^ It's a shame though. With a few more months in development to iron out some issues Deadly Towers might have been a decent little Zelda clone.

I can't remember if I played the arcade version or the NES version... but it really wasn't that bad. I don't know if I ever got that far though... that level one music is epic though!

Just thought I'd pop in on the NES thread since Super Meat Boy has destroyed my thumb after two days of playing. Definitely feels like the NES days. Ouch!

Re: Your memories of the Nintendo Entertainment System (25 years old!!

I loved my NES. I had SMB 1-3, Street Fighter 2010, Double Dragon III, Battletoads, and Strider. Good memories :)

The NES came out when I was 5, but I don't recall getting one of my own until I was 9 - my Mom simply couldn't afford it. But I had played a few games at friends' houses and such, so by the time I actually owned the system I was already hooked. My main passion at the time was the original "Super Mario Bros." (which took me a very long time to beat), along with "The Legend of Zelda", "Double Dragon", "Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!", "Tetris", "Metroid", and several others. I was an introvert from a very early age, but playing video games helped me unlock my imagination and explore my creative side. I'd still be doing now, but the prices for systems and games have skyrocketed beyond belief.

The NES predates me by about three decades (feeling old yet?) but I remember my grandparents had one when I was a kid. I remember at some sort of family gathering my cousins were playing SMB3 in the porch.
When I was around ten my dad installed an emulator of the NES, if that counts. We played many, many games of Balloon Fight, which I remember quite fondly. The emulator stopped working after a couple months though haha

Well, my budget for non-essentials is extremely limited, so to afford a system that's $300 or more I'd have to avoid anything else for at least 3 months.

You can get a Xbox Series S for far less than that, if you shop around. Or get a used older console. I paid $80 for a used PlayStation 3, last year. Many games are super cheap.

I really prefer the games I grew up with, which would now be classified as "retro". I still have some the cartridges and a working NES that I fixed, but to use it I'd need a high-quality upscaler, and those can get expensive very quickly. I don't have anough space in my room to add a CRT TV next to the HD set, so emulation is my only option for the moment.

No need for high quality. Just get a composite to HDMI adapter. Around $15.
