On Oct. 18, 1985, the original Nintendo Entertainment System was released in the United States. It brought video game consoles back from the dead. It made video games mainstream in ways Atari, Intellivision and ColecoVision never could.

Here are X-Play's top 10 NES games of all time:

    1. The Legend of Zelda
    2. Super Mario Bros. 3
    3. Contra
    4. Metroid
    5. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
    6. Mega Man 2
    7. Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
    8. Bionic Commando
    9. Metal Gear
    10. Tecmo Super Bowl

If you owned a NES during your youth, chances are it was the defining console for you.

So what are some of your NES memories? Discovering Samus Aran was a woman? Successfully landing on the aircraft carrier in Top Gun? Finding out there was a second quest in The Legend of Zelda? Up up down down left right left right B A start?

What games got the most play from you?

I remember I begged my parents for one until they got it one day. And then my mother ended up playing it more than my sister or myself.

We got SMB3 soon after release (I think it was $60 ) and we'd "save" our progress by leaving it on overnight. You could continue as many times as you wanted, but you always got sent back to the beginning of the world you were on. It took a lot of time and teamwork to beat world 8, but I finally did it.

I don't I played any other game quite as much, except maybe Overlord. I'll be surprised if anyone else played that.

Yup. Still got it too. Hooked up to the TV and in perfect working order even. :techman:

Out of all the games, I think Duck Hunt got the most play time. Maybe Blades of Steel. And, of course, Crystalis. :D

I remember begging my parents for months to get one; all the other kids on the block have one!!! I remember playing Zelda for hours in my parent's bedroom and it creeping the hell out of me with the dungeon music. I remember playing TMNT 2 for all eternity. I remember going over to my sister's apartment and watching her play Super Mario 3.

I remember when I got my first console, I couldn't play it because it didn't come with the correct connections for a German TV. My dad ordered the part, but said it would take months to get to us (hey, this was back in 1988). A few months later, my mom and I were out on a Friday evening and when we returned, there was my dad sitting there playing Super Mario Brothers.

    I don't think I slept that night. :D

I have fond memories of playing SMB 1-3, Metroid, Tetris and Mega Man 2-3.

Sadly I didn't discover other classics like Zelda, Castlevania and Contra until after their SNES counterparts, therefore they don't hold any nostalgic value.

Hard to believe that the best way to discover great games back in the NES days was by word of mouth.

The internet has changed all that!

The one memory I never forget is me playing the legend of zelda and having the power go out. Turn nes back on and yeah, all save data is gone. I was devastated.

Yes! I booted up every game wondering if it was going to be any good. I would go the local rental place and pick games off the cover art most of the time.

It is interesting though how much word did get around, since everyone I knew at school played the NES.

    Games I played a lot

    Mario
    Castlevania
    Ghostbusters II
    Batman and Batman Returns
    Donkey Kong Classics
    Mike Tyson's Punch-out
    Ghost and Goblins
    Commando
Mega man (2 and 3 mostly)
    Kung-Fu

    And many more

Yeah, Super Dodgeball was awesome. I was creeped out by the Ghost soviets at the end that you had to defeat.

I also remember that my Grandfather had two games, Vegas Dream and some Pebble Beach golfing game.:guffaw:

Oh man! I got my NES as a christmas present in... 1990 I think. I was seven years old. It came with Super Mario, Tetris and Nintendo World Cup. Later on I was even in the Nintendo Club or whatever that was called. Totally useless, but what the hell. I didn't own too many games, though. Mostly I just rented them from a local video store.
