Agreed. Mains are to be developed.

Not automatically given to the Bridge crew. Nowadays, Bailey would be roundly criticized for leaving after only one episode. He needs more, after all for his sacrifice to matter.

Or, so it seems to me.
For me it just seems weird to have a bridge filled with people you don't know. But it works for you. That's great!

You like the showrunner's choice more than I do. It's really no deeper than that.

I really don't like or dislike it. It is.

WELL, it's about damn time Star Trek followed up on TNG's "The Chase"! It made no sense to me that Captain Picard made perhaps the greatest discovery in human history in that episode and Star Trek never bothered to mention ANYTHING from that episode again! Well, here we are 31 years later since that episode aired and we finally get a follow up to it! This plot device has sold me on season 5 of Disco for sure.

Also is it just me or did I see a derelict Enterprise-A for a split second in the preview at the end of the episode showing what to expect this season?!

That's been discussed ongoing in the general thread I believe.

It HAS to be the Enterprise-A right? Cause the original 1701 gets destroyed in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and the Enterprise-A was shown docked at Geordi's Starfleet museum in Picard season 3....

I have high hopes. Let's see how it goes.
Star Trek Discovery 5x1 Red Directive
Ad + Star Trek franchise + Recap
Surfing on a spaceship.
Four Hours Earlier! *tableflip* I hate this troupe.
I want one of those cocktails.
Shuttering the spore drive program? Doesn't seem logical. Science Luminary better do something worthwhile.
"To change" cheers.
The Infinity Room. I dig it. Somehow I feel it's still being recorded.
This is a red directive. wtf does that mean?
Saying it a second time doesn't clarify it!
So we gotta keep the scavengers from getting this mysterious Romulan tech. CHECK.
Who's these guys with the daft punk motorcycle helmets?
Oh it's our 2 villains I've seen in the trailer.
Kovich is pretty intent on success of this mission.
[Intro]
Oh! They added the infinity swirling thing to the intro! I love it. It's like a fidgetspinner.#ADD
Written by Michelle Paradise. This does not bode well. But we will see.
Directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, I like his work.
I still don't get what's so valuable. Is it the cloaking device?
Hull breach
Ok we are caught up to the intro.
Yay it's Captain Lew Ashby!
The rebel ship was in the intro. Makes me think they're getting away.
I'll be perfectly comfortable once you've completed your mission.
Flying right into the bridge from space, that was dope!
Book is back. I'm glad.
Tribble? Rly?
It's a nice walk n talk.
Romulan puzzle box.
(You know JJ Abrams taught Alex about the mystery box concept) #LOST #4815162342
Kovich is not at liberty. Excuse me?
Who's Fred?
Mary Wiseman is awful. It's not the character, it's the actress.
Got the band back together
Oh this is Fred. Is he a soong-droid?
Fred's dead baby, Fred's dead.
Missed opportunity to get Brent Spiner.
So the diary of a Romulan scientist. Okay.
Instead of a walk n talk they are doing a hovercycle n talk. Wild.
Uh oh, things look bad with the avalanche
Starship storm-break. Hmmm
Gotta save the sand people.
Transporter is malfunctioning during the sand storm. How convenient.
Oh now it worked.
The Chase.
Let's fly.
Looks like a good season.

Alright.
I liked it. It was fun. I give it 8.5 Andys#sttnc

Ep2 another night.

A very solid season premiere. Possibly the best of the series.

I'm glad they didn't drag the mystery out. I hope this continues for the rest of the season.

Love the various nods... especially the fact the season is using TNG's "The Chase" as the jumping off point. Always loved that one. (And self-sealing stem bolts! My DS9 heart is happy for the reference.)

I really like that the stakes don't seem to be galaxy ending. Dangerous, yes... but not the end of everything as we know it. It really appears to be STAR TREK meets INDIANA JONES, and that is essentially what "The Chase" was, so I am very happy with the choice.

And I'm going to call it now... the technology is going to be something like the device on Dakara in STARGATE SG-1's 8th season... a device by the Ancients that created life itself AND can be used to destroy it at the same time. (It was how they finally destroyed the Replicators.)

Interestingly enough, it would be a version of the Genesis device from TWOK. So if this does happen, it would be a nice nod to there.

Doug Jones, as always, brings it as Saru. From the start of this series, he has been one of THE best aspects. I really like him and T'Rina together.

Burnham... I'm actually glad that Rayner and Kovich let her know that she screwed up at the beginning, because it sure has felt like she's never wrong too often. And I do find the rift between her and Book... odd for some reason. Perhaps it's been too long since seeing season 4, but I didn't get the impression that there was that great a falling out between them at the end of that season. So this feels somewhat forced for the sake of drama, rather than being organic.

Having said those things, I really do love the fact that she reminded, vehemently, to Rayner that the mission of Starfleet is the people, and not just the current assignment. (There is a difference between the two things.) Rayner is going to be an interesting character this season... not surprising considering who is cast as him. (Since he's in the title credits, it looks like he'll be around for most, if not all, of the season. Yes!)

While I get why they brought TWO starships to basically crash into a planet (which was a pretty impressive sight)... I find the reasoning a bit hard to swallow. We've seen shields extended across much greater distances with 24th century ships, so why couldn't Discovery just hover in front of the settlement for a brief time to stop the avalanche? I know it's a 23rd century ship, but it's been VASTLY upgraded. (Plus, we've seen Kirk extend shields before, like in "MUDD'S WOMEN".)

Moll and La'k are really interesting... looking forward to seeing them more.

I also love Admiral Vance... he has been a true highlight of the 32nd century.

Overall, a surprisingly good episode. This one is an 8 for me.

I just saw it. I gave it a 9. Great start to the season.

Production values as usual were top-notch.

The Data like android was a nice touch. Of course the hardcore fans knew he was an android right away.

I always felt the blockbuster discovery of that TNG episode needed a follow up. Hopefully Discovery will do it justice.

I like Discovery being the only Starfleet ship ever with spore drive.

The Infinity Room is Federation version of Cone of Silence.

I was really hoping Picard would have picked up on it. Especially after that teaser photo full of famous Trek archaeology pieces in his office that really meant nothing in the end.
Would have fitted that show better and certainly would have been a better idea than the terrible plots Picard actually had.

Well, that was bad – but so quintessentially Discovery.

Any glimmer of hope for this show’s improvement faded away somewhere in season 3. Yet, here I am, unable to resist checking in on its final stretch.

It took three attempts to finish the episode (the first check out was after “saxophone lessons”). Olatunde Osunsanmi returns to direct, their trademark style in full force.

This show tries so hard to be cool, yet despite its efforts - and those neck-breaking camera angles - it ends up being all style and no substance.

What's a Red Directive? Dunno. But apparently, it’s super-duper-important, except no one seems to take it seriously. Orders are disregarded as if they're just suggestions. What matters is that Michael Burnham must know the stakes and the reasons behind it all. She simply can't accept that it’s important, highly classified, and her job to execute it - a job she fails at least twice in one episode. No doubt a reprimand will be forthcoming – oh, what's that, Kovich? Yes, of course, she should spearhead the team. Silly me.

Perhaps you might be conjuring up a precedent set by some other Starfleet officer to render the above critique null and void. Sure, you could reference any number of episodes from the canon. But no matter which past episode you choose, were they ever this... obnoxious about it all?

The problem with Burnham in this episode is the same as every other – she's boring and ofttimes unlikeable.

Oh yes, her and Book started their little private little remember when … bit again. That’s always fun.

At least there’s Strange New Worlds. While watching this episode’s splendiferous CGI sequences, I couldn’t help but wonder how many extra episodes we could’ve squeezed out of SNW S2 if they’d just Batgirl’d (or Prodigy’d) this season. More SNW is the only Trek I have a shred of interest these days. They’ve only managed to get one live-action project right - Just do that exclusively for a bit and give it all the damn money.

I went in with low expectations. Normally I get something out of Disco's whiz bang openers, airheaded as they typically are. But this time round, it did nothing for me.

A properly bad episode, but so very Disco - like they've taken the essence of the show and concentrated it into something even more ... Disco-ish. <shudder>

2 / 10.

I think I know Detmer is gay and a cyborg but that's about it for the bridge crew.

Where did you get that idea?

Memory-Alpha says she was dating a male crew member in Season 1.

Seán over at Trek Culture thinks this alien in Episode 1, behind Stamets at the party at the start of the episode, may be a Selay. I can kinda see it, looks reptilian, has wide head things
IgPbacO.png

I think the confusion comes from the actress coming out as queer. Detmer has never actually been shown as gay, though fans ship Detmer/Owo hard.

Review:

Its good that this is a followup to "The Chase". But this plot is only happening because Starfleet doesn't seem to use holographic crews in the 32nd century. Since Rayner's idea with the tractor beam made sense. And if the Antares was holographic crew, there was no real danger in their ship being ripped apart.

And yet, Kovich gets upset at Burnham, even though its on Starfleet as a whole that they were unprepared. Not to mention they should know by know that Burnham always takes the initiative by herself.

Otherwise, I appreciate the efforts of world building (Breen Imperium, Tholian Republic, Altan Soong reference, etc). Makes the 32nd century feel more alive.

8/10
