Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

Isn't Patrick Stewart also in that? Speaking of him, I'm honestly kind of shocked he's never been on DW.

He is, yes.

I can certainly imagine P-Stew in the original DW, at least, before 1987. Once he was cast as Picard, I can understand why it hasn’t happened. There’s his unavailability when working in the USA and possibly his salary (though he has done U.K. tv such as guest appearances in Extras or a leading role in The Eleventh Hour.

The real issue is likely to have been finding a role for someone who plays such an iconic role in another sci-fi franchise. I know that shows like Babylon 5 or Stargate made good use of Star Trek actors but I don’t think they ever had eg Shatner or Nimoy. I can kinda see how it might just be too glaring or distracting, like having, say, Mark Hamill turn up in TNG might have been.

Since Russell T. Davies is in the title, I thought I would share here that his book about his first Doctor Who show-running experience is on sale for $14.99 (usually $24.99).

Thread duty: May is going to be an excellent sci-fi month. Doctor Who starts back up, and we get the Phantom Menace back in theaters for a week. Woo-hoo!

I think the subject came up one of the times he was on Graham Norton with Ian McKellen and he said he'd be happy to be in it but, as you say, he could understand why it might be distracting.

Stewart used to be sniffier about TV and science fiction (he infamously asked Lalla Ward during production of the BBC TV Hamlet why she was wasn’t doing more proper theatre work instead of things like Doctor Who), so it’s not surprising he wasn’t part of the classic series.

Given that RTD wanted to do a crossover with Star Trek in 2005 and was a fan of Picard, I can imagine one role he’d probably love to have Stewart play, but I can’t see Paramount going for that.

I honestly thought this was just CGI; especially since it's probably just for a pre-credits gag in Episode 1.

Yeah, I guess that makes sense. I wasn't even thinking about the Star Trek connection as much as just the fact that they have managed to get some pretty impressive actors on the series over the series.

Look like they're releasing the titles one at a time, every 30 minutes.

Episode 1 is "Space Babies", which is ironic as that's what I'd been referring to it as, since I knew it was (a) set in space and (b) had a lot of babies in it!

Episode 2 is "the Devil's Chord" but we already knew that one.

Episode 5 is not the Regency one any more but the one with the giant brain sucking slugs and is called "Dot and Bubble".

Episode 6 is now the Regency one and it's called "Rogue". (Groff is totally playing the the new Captain Jack, figuratively or literally.)

So we can now confirm only two out of eight, or rather two out of twelve aren't written by Russell. No surprise if he decided to give Xmas 2024 to Moffat to give himself a break, then.

Episode 7 is... "The Legend of Ruby Sunday".

And we finish with "Empire of Death", which is basically the only classically Doctor Who-ish sounding title of the bunch.

Edit: Hmm, well I suppose 7 is an The X of Y, so that counts too.

I guess I found it confusing because that is all happening now for Doctor Who.
The article is a bit sloppy since that whole last sentence is referring to something RTD was saying before they part they quoted, about how we've been in a moment for big-budget science fiction on television/streaming. The "it's" should've been bracketed out to explain what he'd said a moment earlier, and that he was speaking in the historical context of when he first rejoined the show and immediately before, when he was speaking out in interviews and arguing for a much bigger investment in Who, including co-producers who could bring in the big money.

I really hope they play this as straight and dry as possible with no hint of fun just to subvert expectations.

Captain- I am Captain John Straxton of the starship Odyssey. We need help repairing out hyperdrive.
