It's like 'Batgirl' . There's nothing to suggest it would have been any better than the other terrible movies but because it will never be seen people will convince themselves they're being deprived of a masterpiece.
i don't think anyone was saying it was a masterpiece... but given the track record of the directors, and the amount of money spent, as well as actors involved (c'mon man, JK Simmons!) , as well as suspicions about David Zaslav's judgement/values... many of us think it would have been better than what Zaslav told stockholders. Certainly no worse than The Flash
I think the issue is that there was a change of management when the film was pretty well along in production. The previous regime wanted to make both big-budget features and smaller TV/streaming productions, with Batgirl being in the latter category, while the new regime was only interested in making huge-budget tentpoles. So the movie may have been good enough for what the original execs intended, but didn't live up to the new execs' standards. It's not uncommon for new bosses to kill their predecessors' projects.
Actually, i think a couple of changes??? The initial plan was for it to be on Max... as they are trying to pump that streaming service to compare with the other ones. But then some genius thought it would be better in the theater (i suspect someone
not running Max). Then we get the merger with Discovery, where control has now changed.
And then we got David Zaslav, who many of us are seeing as a non-creative bean counter who is just trying to make a quick buck... he didn't have confidence that it would make a lot of money in the theaters....and can someone remind me of the timing of Batgirl's trashing to Zack Snyder's Justice League? I suspect that ZSJL did
not justify the cost put into it (i.e. how many subscribed to see it and/or even viewed it in the first place), so Zaslav went the penny pnching route... completely oblivious to how the PR would spin out of control.
I don’t trust any exec who says a film isn’t cinematic enough. The Marvel/Disney execs said the same about The Avengers and were reportedly very worried about it before it was released. There were obviously incredibly wrong.
And also the directors were the guys who did Bad Boys for Life, which was the top grossing movie of 2020. OK, sure the pandemic lockdown started 2 months after the release.... but its numbers would have placed it in the top 10 in 2023 (the year after all the lockdowns were clearly removed). They had experience with a cinematic action success.... and at least for me, MS. Marvel showed what they could do (in a positive creative way) with TV-based filming.
The quality "had" to be promoted as bad to justify the tax-write off strategy.
