Captain Alisdair: Onscreen.Give us a summary of what they said.
Replicators give them no need for actual animal products (which actually makes them all vegan)."Vegetarian"?
Depends on what was fed into the replication system. Like if on DS9, they killed a bunch of Cardassian voles and threw the dead ones into the disposal chutes, where they were molecularized and later recombined by the replicators. You could order a green salad, but it technically wouldn't be vegan, would it?Replicators give them no need for actual animal products (which actually makes them all vegan).

Well like the admiral said in the 32nd century.. it's shit .. we eat our own shite
Precisely my point. Some vegans are now eating cultured meat.the replicator sidesteps the philosophical opposition to consuming something which once lived.
One, that's all food. We're drinking dinosaur piss and eating worm shit, just broken down a billion times over, recycled, and remade, and two, well with the advance of enrichment chemistry we are injecting new, never-before-or-at-least-locked-away stuff into our food to make it even better.
Jeez if that's really a line from Dis or whatever, is that supposed to be shocking or something to the audience? (Edit: yep, apparently it is, delivered by an Admiral with the tact of a schoolboy and shockingly these advanced future beings react disgustedly...like...this isn't news? To anybody?) That's literally a cornerstone of any closed system, which includes planets, and most definitely smaller stuff like our first long-term space stations and missions. ECLSS makes it possible for people to be around to make warp go/land on Mars, after all.
I remember ENT had this aversion to it too, tucker was talking about how they recycle everything on a spaceship but stopped short of 'food' for 'boots'.

As a meat dodger for around four decades, I'd happily try cultured meat. I think that, at that point the terms vegetarian, vegan and plant-based become superfluous. You are simply animal free. The bottom line? These folks are not vegetarians.
Same. Except for the meat dodger part.As a meat dodger for around four decades, I'd happily try cultured meat. I think that, at that point the terms vegetarian, vegan and plant-based become superfluous. You are simply animal free.
It was the killing and cruelty bit for me, but as it went on, the environmental aspect was also a factor.Same. Except for the meat dodger part.
It provides actual meat, but eliminates both the killing and the environmental disruption of mass production, plus post-slaughter clean-up. Plus, since a vat doesn't exercise, the meat is likely to be higher quality.
If they don't eat animal products from actual animals, then they're ethical vegans. Cultured meat is vegan. The bottom line? These folks are not vegetarians.
Why would a lack of exercise make for better meat? It's actually a negative because then the meat doesn't have the texture we expect. Cultured meat will have to be artificially exercised in order to perfectly replicate that texture.Plus, since a vat doesn't exercise, the meat is likely to be higher quality.
The most popular cuts of beef are from the parts of the animal that get the least exercise. A vat-grown culture could grow that sort of meat uniformly. Imagine steak or roast beef at a fraction of the current price. Why would a lack of exercise make for better meat? It's actually a negative because then the meat doesn't have the texture we expect.
