Sony Spider-Verse discussion thread

Not saying this movie is good but it's been written off since day one so I'm not surprised at people jumping on Twitter to pile on first thing in the morning.

I should also say, if they do a buddy-villain movie starring The Grizzly and The Kangaroo, I will be a very happy bunny.

So it looks like this movie has met the same completely changed in the editing room fate that befell Morbius.

The original plot, which involved ensuring Peter gets born, has been removed, with Adam Scott as Ben and Emma Roberts as his mother, now barely appearing in it.

Oh and they cut out that line of dialogue. You know, the one that generated half of the movie's publicity.

I just saw Roberts was in this by scrolling past a blurb that has her listed as a main cast member and I was like, what the hell? I had not seen that anywhere else. Makes me feel old, her now playing the mom....

Yeah, nothing about this movie has filled me with confidence but at this point I think Sony could release something as good as The Winter Soldier or even Ant-Man and it wouldn't get a chance.

I think this might be the greatest screenwriting IMDB credit ever.

“He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders right before she died.”

Had that stayed in the movie, it would’ve been an automatic Razzie win for Dakota Johnson, if not a career ender.
Huh. Barely remember that line. It's far better than "...and some kind of bat radar."

Granted, very low bar.

A little unfair to omit the Lost in Space series but yeah that's pretty rough. I don't know why they would give anything to someone associated with Morbius, no matter what anyone thinks personally of it I would think they just wouldn't want the public stink of the thing on them.

The thing is, writers in the feature film industry have essentially no power. They're treated as nothing more than hired contractors paid to write what the director tells them to write. And the writers who get onscreen credit for a film are usually just a fraction of the total number of writers who did various different drafts that got mixed and matched together. So writers really have no control over the quality of the films they're attached to. Directors and producers are free to throw out anything the writers do and replace it with something entirely different, while often still giving the original writers credit.

It's different in television, which is a writer-driven medium. Sazama & Sharpless did terrific work with Lost in Space, where they had creative control in a way they wouldn't have had in their movies. It looks like they've have pretty bad luck with their movie work overall. (Power Rangers was actually pretty good, but they only did the story there.)

I'm going to leave the poor movie alone after this but here's a group of people who probably wish the strike had lasted just a bit longer.

You're actors, gang, at least pretend to be happy to be there.
