Sony Spider-Verse discussion thread

I really like Matt Smith, its sucked that he only seems to show up in mainstream US stuff that is a total flop. I'm glad he got that Game of thrones spinoff role, I don't watch that franchise but at least it seems like he got a decent role in a successful production again.

I was thinking something similar too. If you haven’t seen Last Night in Soho, I recommend it, though he has a fairly small role. His role in a movie called His House is even smaller but it’s also worth a watch.

I just read a story that Dakota fired her agent because he and Sony misled her into thinking she would be staring in a MCU film.

There no actual credible source for this

The notion of her leaving because she was misled was a subjective speculative point in the ItM article. Something they actually admit further down in that very article:

Still, there’s no official explanation as to why Johnson jumped ship to CAA; it’s only speculation.

It’s purely clickbait

Wow, they're so desperate. I wonder what Swift's lawyers would have to say about using her & the super bowl to promote this movie....

He's really good in it (and sexy af).

Having checked out how tickets are, or rather aren't selling (the BFI IMAX in London is even worse than for 'The Marvels') I wonder if Sony will finally get the hint this time? Or will they just continue pissing money away?

I think it's fair to say the Matrix cast were largely not, at the time, A-list stars. Maybe "relative unknowns" is stretching it a bit.

When Iron Man hit theaters in 05 (or whatever) the genre had previously been basically Spider-Man and X-Men

Regardless of the stars, the movie had great word of mouth. I saw it based on the recommendation of a friend (actually I friend who wanted to see it a second time and dragged me to the theatre). I then two three other people to see it, and they loved it. (An anecdotal experience, but I imagine the same happened a lot for that movie as there was nothing really that stood out for it pre-release).

That's exactly how it went for me. I had actually written it off because of Keanu at the time, but a friend was all "No, no, it's actually amazing, you need to see it!"

This wasn't a bit part:

No, it wasn't a bit part, but many white people (especially sci-fi fans) would not have seen it or known Laurence Fishbourne from that.

I think the marketing and especially word of mouth really made it successful . BoxOfficeMojo shows how Frida0to-Friday, the drop was only between 20-30% each, and in fact, by memorial day, there were a couple of weeks of UNDER 10% drops from Friday to Friday... clearly a success that people kept going to see, well beyond the premiere.

Which, going back to the topic... Most Sony movies, especially in 2024, will not have that effect,

Just had a look - many showings at Manchester Printworks (my local cinema) have NO seats present booked.

This is dead on arrival.

Ouch. Just, ouch.

And these are the social media reviews that tend to be overly positive because the people writing them have been given freebies.
All around unsurprising but also a damn shame since I loved the work S.J l. Clarkson did on Jessica Jones, as well as Celeste O'Connor in Afterlife.

Sadly, Sony will have all of the wrong takeaways including "people don't like female superheros."
