Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

Wait til they reset the 16th Doctor as the 1st Doctor.

Tbh I'm okay with the season reset. I haven't been able to keep track of which season of Who we're on since season 9, and all the gaps and interim specials don't help. Just calling it season one feels whole lot less exhausting to figure out at this point.

Don't you mean season 41?
I use to be one of those people but I gave up the ghost fairly quickly. In that case, it does make sense for a reset because it was complete overhaul of the show after a lengthy hiatus.

However, in this case, there's zero reason for it than some obnoxious marketing to bring in new viewers.

Either way, I will never refer to the modern iteration as nuWho. I will die on that hill.

I don't know. I can kind of see some logic in the approach. After all, contrary to the fact that it has fans of all ages, the primary target audience for Doctor Who is children, as stated by RTD himself as well as the other two showrunners from modern times. And the simple fact of the matter, children of today are going to be more interested in watching season 1 of a show than they are season 14 of a show which premiered nineteen years ago

I mean, yes, in this streaming era, catching up on fourteen previous seasons is super easy, barely an inconvenience, particular since the longest seasons are only thirteen episodes plus holiday specials. But like it or not, children are going to consider the Eccleston season dated by modern standards. Just like if children from 2005 tried to watch the Sylvester McCoy era. Or if you want to be exact with the nineteen year figure, if they watched Trial of a Time Lord.

Yeah, that definitely fries my brain. Eccleston's season is the same length of time in the past as Colin Baker's final season was back when Eccleston's season was first airing.

But do kids really care about a season number?

Besides, Doctor Who has a built-in mechanism that allows viewers of all ages to jump in anywhere without worry about what happened before: By starting at the beginning of each Doctor's era.

Would new viewers think that way though? The other thing is Season One is the only one that will be available to Disney viewers. If you call it Season 14 or whatever, is a new viewer going to feel inclined to jump on?

Comes down to the marketing. It's not that hard to explain that conceit of regeneration and how that creates a new, standalone era without worrying about the past.

Besides, in this day and age of the Internet, it's not that difficult to suddenly discover that the show has a far vaster history. Wouldn't it be preferable to be honest and straightforward on that point and then sell the idea that you can jump in at any point without any issues? Feels deceptive to me to instead to try and pretend this all there is and then go "Oops! A whole lot more!" (I know, the very essence of marketing is deception...)

Or am I overthinking this process with my naive optimism?

It’s probably also a factor that Disney doesn’t have the streaming rights to any of the 2005-2022 episodes, and would prefer not to say “Here’s Series 14, go visit our competitor for the first 13 series.”

Yeah, that's one thing that does make sense, if only for marketing reasons. Doesn't mean I have to like it or abide to it.

Hmm. Looks like the spin-off will be doing location shooting on the Isle of Wight, which has lots of picturesque coastline for Sea Devils to emerge from.
