The low quality of Star Trek DVD:s

You might want to re-examine who you’re buying from. Seriously. Just because they sell them as being from Paramount, doesn’t mean they are.

Then, start checking equipment. A dirty laser or loose belt can lead to issues. Make sure the firmware is up to date.
But they are officially released products which I have bought from stores which have a good reputation, Amazon among them. Not fron shady small shops on some backstreet.

My DVD player is working fine and as I've mentioned before, I have dVDs from the beginning of the 2000 which still works fine. My problems are only with those Star Trek series DVDs, except for the Voyager seasons I bought in 2006. They still works fine, even if I noticed a small glitch in the episode Tuvix some months ago..

Naturally the more you buy, the greater potential for problem-discs. Once in a while you just get a nasty TITLE. There was a Barbara Bouchet horror DVD called IN THE BELLY OF THE TARANTULA which I ordered two copies of...since both of them rattled my DVD player worse than the EXORCIST bed.

DVDs are best cleaned with outward motions rather than circular ones, with non-abrasive soft fabric. I avoid the plastic ''cleaners'' altogether.

Yes, but there's an unacceptable high percent of Star trek DVDs malfunctioning for me.
Not the sme problems at all with other series.

Well, that should be a reason for people to react!
Agreed but part of that reaction may be having to go without.

The other side is that many people either think they are alone in their experience or that it is a one off problem. Now, the only way to communicate that to the company is to make a return and not purchase more.

Or, there may not be many people having these issues. So no reason to boycott.

The last suggestion is unacceptable since that would mean that I no longer can watch the series I like the most.

My intent is to steer up some anger from all dissatisfied buyers. The more who complain, the better chance for a reaction.

Agreed, same deal.

Then it might not tell them their is a problem.

Agreed, but loss of revenue speaks larger volumes.

I’ve just haven’t seen another person with as many issues with Star Trek DVD’s as you do. So I think you should investigate all possibilities.

I've sent a lot of emails and snailmails to Paramount, pointing out the problems but I haven't got one single reply.

Maybe I'm the one who complain about them here?

A tip to fireproof78 and BillJ: Go to any Amazon site and read the reviews about the different Star Trek DVD-boxes which they are selling. You will find a lot of complaints about horrible packaging, unwatchable episodes on those DVDs and even wrong language on some of them.

Which is fine. I am not saying I don't believe you.

Only that the losses to Paramount are not high enough to warrant a change in business practice. So, it seems people are unwilling to go without, to be willing to delay gratification, which means Paramount still gets their money. Why change?

I would see this all the time when I worked in retail. People would complain about the prices and quality of Nike, Under Armour and other top brands in athletic wear or shoes and yet they would still keep buying them. That doesn't make sense to me.

I offered a few suggestions. I wish you luck in resolving your issue.

You're much better off finding people that might also be affected on a physical media BBS... Home Theater Forum, the DVD Forum, maybe the UK based AV Forum or Blu-ray Forum. You'd then be asked about the tiny codes printed on the DVD, oh all your bad discs came from this one plant in ______.

Aside from the off/on speculation about HD remastering, the only time DS9 and VGR have come up in the physical media community in the last decade has revolved around people unknowingly ending up with bootlegs despite the box looking real. People that collect a lot of physical media are very fearful about any kind of mass disc failure.

As for iTunes or other streaming services, I have no intention to pay a monthly sum to companies
Not promoting any format, but iTunes purchases are only restricted to streaming if you want to watch them in 4K (if available). Otherwise, they are downloadable files that can be watched without internet in full HD (or whatever highest resolution is available). This is similar to purchases on Google Play and Amazon, and different from Netflix and Disney (you can download from the latter two, but not indefinitely). Just additional information.

I've got most Trek that is available on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4k and I've never had a problem with any of them.

I'd go with the consensus that you've either got bootlegs, you're somehow mishandling them, or you've got some kinda equipment issue.

I will take a look at it. It can be an option if it only comes to watching one or two episodes, not a whole series.

Where do you buy your discs?

I have to start in that direction because:
1. I treat my discs very good. The only problem I might have is when the discs come in very bad pagaging, something which the Star trek discs often does. I then move them to better packages but first I have to get them out of the official boxes which can be a bit tricky.

2. I've controlled my discs and what I can see, they are no bootlegs. To be honest, I've seen illegal discs which have lasted much longer than the Star Trek ones I buy from retailers like Amazon.

Are there some special things I should look for to see if a disc is bootleg or not and what with those Star trek discs which are sold by Amazon in countries like the UK and Germany?

3. I've had two DVD players during the last 20 years, the first lasted from 2002 to 2021 when I bought the current one. I can't blame those DVD players for the damage since other DVDs I have works fine. In fact, the only problems I have had is with those Star Trek DVDs.

That might be the truth.

But isn't it a bigger risk that Paramount, if faced with a decline in sold Star trek DVDs simply abandon Star Trek, stop producing Trek stuff totally and instead goes for 2020's blood-splattering, dystopian, highly PC, bad-produced and bad acted series with bad stories instead?

Then we have gained nothing.

Most my Trek DVDs are 20 years old now (how did 2 decades manage to pass so quickly?) and still work perfectly.

So what?

That is the risk of course but such stands require that. If you're willing to continue to compromise for the sake of satisfaction then nothing changes. Oh, we moan and complain, but so long as we pay them money then nothing will change. It takes repeated demonstration of a defective product to get it to change. That is the nature of business.

The VOY DVDs I bought in 2006 still works fine. The only thing Iäve noticed was a slight glitch in the episode Tuvix some months ago.
I have some movies and other series which I bought in 2004-2005 and they still work fine too. So does also the TOS DVDs I bought in 2007.
It's the TNG and DS9 DVDs which i've bought after 2012 which gives me problems.

Once in a great while when you get a box set, it's manufactured by a sadist. The original LOST IN SPACE Blu-Ray and the BATTLE ROYALE deluxe collection were so frigging tight in the packets it's a wonder none of mine were damaged while crowbarring them out. I literally tore a few extra openings on some of them. I don't believe TREK has ''tried'' this sadistic approach.

I haven't seen the packaging DVD sets you are mentioning.
But the packagiong of the recent TNG and DS9 boxes are horrible.
To get the last DS9 season 7 disc (Disc 7) to replace the malfunctioning one in the previous box, I had to remove Disc 6 which was attached above Disc 7 and with at least two other discs on the pile slightly above it.

It took a loooooooooong time of first carefully removing it two discs of the pile slightly above the one I wanted to access from that plastic thing which the discs is attached too. Then I had to do the same thing with Disc 6 to be able to access Disc 7 and then I had to do the same thing with Disc 7 too to get it out and then I had to carefully attaching first Disc 6 again and then Disc 3 and 4 on that other plastic thing slightly above.

No wonder that discs get damaged when they are so badly packaged!

This is how they are packaged! Seven seasons in one box. OK, the pictures are from a Voyager box (taken from a complaint on the Amazon site) but it'ts the same package for the TNG and DVD boxes.
