What Should the Music be like in the New Star Trek series?

As long as Jeff Russo doesn't continue to write the main titl
e themes for the series, I'll be happy. I haven't cared for his themes, which all seem to end with a crib from Alexander Courage's original fanfare, and haven't really had that much of a hummable core melody in the way TOS, TNG, DS9, and VGR did.

Oh God absolutely. They take forever to remember how they go, he seems to never be sure how to actually finish them, and the little fanfare flurry at the end is usually superfluous. Giacchino's (Kelvin, Prodigy) are instantly memorable. I would also like to see Avelange's efforts given a try:

Cinematic, not so overtly bombastic or grating or trite, not flat (!!!), not cookie cutter, let it complement a scene but not be the scene, and there's no need for an 800-piece orchestra just for the sake of more instruments in a garish attempt to make it seem more "epic".

Just without the trite stuff that was popular in the 2000s but still clings like lint regarding banshee choir huff and other over-the-top, overdone pomposity. It was there when Star Wars prequels then later Doctor Who and how many other shows all did a similar style.

"What Should the Music be like in the New Star Trek series?"

Whatever the producer and/or composer wants it to be.

I agree with so much I've seen here, because I kinda want it all.
But I'll add this: Just as there are series themes we like to have snuck into the soundtrack, like they do in critical points of PIC/LDS, I would also like to see character leitmotifs.
Not necessarily full blown themes for characters, but for example more emphasis on a certain instrument if the centre of attention is supposed to be on the one character. For example, Gray and Adira Tal would have a cello accentuated in their scenes, since it's important to them.

You know like the sign language guys in the corner of the screen? Like that, except it's Riker blasting jazz for the whole show.

Very
Well
Said!

Not sure about the theme and scoring, but I think the in-universe music that the characters listen to in their leisure time should be some bizarre, dissonant noise that we primitive and unevolved, early 21st-century mouth-breathers wouldn't recognize as music.

*starts wondering about the evolutionary path in the 23rd+ centuries that would involve not mouth breathing.*

*also questions personal musical choices when listening to classic music and traditional folk music. And sea shanties*

Beatnik poetry constantly in the background of all scenes.

Here is the TNG alternate theme which I mentioned earlier. This can most definitely be reworked in to a new series… so much familiarity and bravado!

There are a select few Jeff Russo theme to consider bringing back.

From DIS
Kasseelian Opera
Andorian Opera
Maybe various Klingon themes such as Torchbearer, for Klingon themed stories

From PIC S1
Romulan Collusion
Tal Shiar Admonisher
Romulans Arrive Pts 1 & 2
Seven Need Revenge (for Seven)
Raffi Calls Bosch (for Raffi)
Raffi Opens up (for Raffi)
The Crew Leaves as One

From PIC S2
The Pressure of Legacy
Disappointment in Leadership
the first half of Let’s See What’s Out There

I’d imagine that the La Forges theme and I Like that Seven! from PIC S3 stay.

I feel like some combination of Legacies and Legacy and Future from PIC S3 will be the show theme.

But I think they should come up with their own soundtrack that works for the stories they are telling. Like, leave the Jeff Russo DIS tracks for Starfleet Academy. Those tracks would fit better there. And don't lean on nostalgia too much. its one thing to bring back the Amok Time theme, or Klingon theme, or Species 8472 theme, if it fits the context of the story. But I don't want the show to lean on the TOS movies soundtracks, as its not a Lost Era show. While it was understandable for PIC S3, as it was supposed to be a TOS movie with the TNG crew, the next show doesn't need to lean on the TOS movies at all.

They need to get Nami Melumad from SNW and PRO, Chris Westlake from LD, or Michael Giacchino to compose for the show.
