It's the "Hey, remember these guys?!?" trailer.

Nostalgia special. Hey remember when we made great Avengers movies? Watch The Marvels!

I mean I hope it's a good movie, the first one was great, but that has me all...

I believe the review embargo ends at 9 PM tonight. I can't remember if that's EST or PST, though.

So...this is bad because it relies on shared history even though the supposed strength of the MCU is it's shared history, except when we don't want it to have a shared history? We want it to stand alone?

Ok, I give up. I want to know why this is bad? Looks like standard trailer fodder, and MCU relying on past connections. Which is has always done. Hell, this would make the original Avengers bad because it shows clips from Captain America: First Avenger?

The 11th hour tonal shift and framing it as a successor to the Infinity War saga, for starters. Dangling Tony and Steve is blatant "you 'member!?" bait and looks desperate. Pre-sales for The Marvels have been abysmal; that they would drop something this just days before the film's release adds credence to the idea that Disney are on high alert for another high-profile flop.

One does not need to be a MCU cynic to get this.

It slipped my mind to reserve a ticket until a friend reminded me the movie was coming up (and mentioned the poor pre-sales) and I was shocked that I was able to get a Friday matinee just off from the theater centerline less than a week in advance. Usually I don't even bother trying and just aim for a Monday or Tuesday showing after opening weekend, and even those are usually a touch more crowded. And Friday is a holiday!

Never said it was bad per se.

From what I read, the mentioning of Thanos and such in the trailer really doesn't get followed up in the film, it was clearly meant just for the trailer.

It's not so sudden. From the MCU thread:

Annnnnnyways...

New The Marvels featurette which includes some new footage and suggests a thematic connection between Thanos and Zawe Asthon's Dar-Benn:

Which makes sense and I feel, without watching the final trailer (because why watch any more when the film is almost here?), that might what that trailer is going for. Or perhaps not.

But, honestly, does that really matter? No one is going to remember the ad campaign years from now (or even next month). All anyone will remember is the quality of the film itself.

So why not just wait until the film actually comes out? A crazy thought, I know. Makes me glad I'm super busy with work the next two and half days before I can watch it Saturday morning.

At the same time, a trailer is designed to convince someone whether a movie is worth seeing or not. I don't know how it does that without generating opinions of some sort before the movie. Forming opinions about a trailer at least seems fair game.

Gonna see it in 2 hours.
Have been looking forward to this since it was announced as a Captain Marvel & Ms Marvel combo of sorts.
Enjoyed the first movie, really liked Ms Marvel, haven't seen WandaVision. (Don't like the primary character)

Don't care about reviewers and YT clickbaity talking heads or the overall discourse on (anti)social networks.

Some sources are spreading rumours about the post-credits scene for "The Marvels"

Kelsey Grammer returns as Beast, and is studying incursions & multiverse stuff. This is to tie into Deadpool 3 where the Fox Universe gets destroyed etc.

Confirmed. Monica Rambeau ends up in the Fox universe. She meets Maria Rambeau who is not her mother in the Fox universe

First reactions from reviewers to advanced screenings are coming in. They are decidedly mixed...

  • Some are praising the tone, confirming it's wacky, lighthearted and a bit goofy of a film. Very different tonally from Captain Marvel it seems.
  • On the other hand, the film seems like it was butchered in post-production, feels jerky and disjointed, and the final act is rushed/has missing scenes.
  • Dar-Benn is apparently a terrible and forgettable villain, though this isn't a killer issue (look at GOTG).
  • Apparently feels more like a season finale of a TV show than a movie, FWIW.
  • No complaints regarding VFX
