Playmates Toys

Yeah, they really got screwed by the studio when it came to the Generations figures and the initial E-E.

then again, they also made some weird decisions with the TNG movie lines. Unposeable figures for Generations and out of scale figures for First Contact. Then no figures for Insurrection.

Oh, they had figures for Insurrection, all right. They were just larger scale again, this time around 9" and with Mego style fabric uniforms and costumes. I remember wondering why they were all in civilian outfits except Riker and Geordi (I didn't see the movie until it came out on video) so when my dad offered me the choice between getting Picard and Riker or the Enterprise-E, the decision was super easy, as I already had the space talk Picard and Riker, but had missed the First Contact Enterprise-E release because it sold out like hot cakes two years earlier.

And another Enterprise-E that had a removable Captain's Yacht.

right but they did the 9 inch figures for Generations too. I had Kirk for sure and I think Picard was in the DS9 uniform. I meant figures that could interact with the 99% of the rest of the figures they made.

I hope that’s the next light and sound ship they do. But I was only talking about the things they did wrong.

The FC spacesuit figure has concept drawing helmet details, and the torso was yellow in ads, but at least that was corrected to red. If I ever get one, I'll try to paint the wrong parts of the helmet and make the legs red too...

Which characters from Insurrection were you so desperate to play with?

I did some research. Insurrection may not have had a dedicated line of figures, but in 1999, just months after the movie was released, Target had an exclusive line of figures in the original 5" scale consisting of the TNG cast (minus Geordi, which is kinda odd) in their First Contact/Insurrection uniforms. They are SUPER rare now; most old 5" Playmates figures are between $10 and $20 individually, whereas an individual figure from the 1999 Target exclusive TNG movie line costs $50 nowadays.

yeah, those Target exclusives are super expensive now on eBay. Wasn’t there a Bev Crusher that was exclusive to Europe or something like that?

It kills me because I remember coming across them once and deciding to pass since I had stopped collecting the line. Now, I would love to have them.

Weirdly they seemed easier to get hold of in the UK - we even got the Dr Crusher figure that Target dropped. They are still some of the easier ones to get hold of.

It's the DS9 and Voyager figures that are really tough to find here in my experience.

They changed the absolutely correct bridge area to an absolutely wrong one.
And the neck shuttlebays have the same size now, so I guess this is the PIC S1 SFHQ holo version :D

Oof...that review was PAINFUL to watch...

I hate to sound like I'm gatekeeping, and I don't like to be mean, but seriously...those guys are idiots. It's bad enough they kept referring to the escape pods as "windows", but I had to turn the video off after the one guy kept ripping the saucer section off the star drive four or five times in a row, as if there weren't a GIANT DEDICATED BUTTON right below the saucer separation seam! My collector's OCD went off as I kept thinking about this poor brand new, freshly unboxed Enterprise-D which is now probably damaged goods because these losers didn't think to read the instructions before trying to operate it. Playmates deserves better publicity from people with some actual common sense.

End rant, and apologies if I ruffled any feathers. That video just really irked me, LOL.

I think he tried to check if it stays connected if you pull the saucer without pushing the button, like how stable it is when connected.

For the price, I think that’s a lovely E-D. If they were ever available in Vietnam, I’d get one and I’m not a person who really owns stuff like that. It would look fantastic on my desk, set to one side.

I saw a review of the First Contact Enterprise-E on YouTube and my God are the sound effects terrible. Apparently the annoying cricket noise when you press the first button is supposed to be the ship cloaking. Someone in the comments claimed that in an early draft of First Contact the Enterprise had a cloaking device and pulse phasers. Can anyone confirm that?

Also he did the Insurrection one too.

Watching the unboxing video of the new E-D…I’m glad I passed. The deflector looks bad, same with the new bridge module and the lack of the lower saucer phaser array….it just doesn’t look right.

and yeah, I get that it’s just a toy.
