Do you feel bad knowing Sam Kirk's fate?

The affable sidekick always dies. ALWAYS. Like Goose in Top Gun and Captain Borodin in The Hunt for Red October.

We knew Goose was going to die practically since the opening credits, and Borodin's fate was sealed as soon as he had that "Do you think they will let me live in Montana?" talk with Ramius.

No, I'm mostly just glad that he gets to live, something he wouldn't have done in any meaningful way without SNW. And I don't have to worry about him ever dying on this show, which for me is great! :)

I don’t feel bad knowing that KIrk eventually get’s shot in the back, or that Spock dies in the Kelvin Universe.

Same for Sam KIrk.

In a way, any given characters endpoint is the least interesting thing about them.

I suppose SNW adds more depth and resonance to his death. It’s just a shame that finally it’s all undercut by the absurd image of Shatner playing his own brother with a glued on moustache under his nose.

I don't mind because it's kinda of a bonus that we are seeing this character to begin with . I just hope the writers resist the urge to meddle with his fate in any way. Please no time crystal stuff with Sam. They have already used that get out of jail free card with Pike on that front.

I doubt anyone involved with the Final Frontier, including Shatner, remembered Sam.
No doubt, you're right. But in my own head canon, Kirk's words in that scene are relevant to Sam.

At first, I thought differently. I thought, wow, Kirk's callously ignoring Sam's death, by referring to Spock as the "brother" he lost. But is Kirk callously ignoring Sybok's death by referring to Spock as the "brother" he lost? I don't think so. I think he's respecting Spock's grief for the loss of his biological brother, but comforting Spock in that moment of grief, by reminding him of their own brotherhood, everything they share with each other. And one of the things they now share, which they've never shared before, is the experience of losing a biological brother. Kirk's riddling phrasing about who counts as his brother simultaneously acknowledges the loss of Sam and Sybok while affirming the brotherhood of Kirk and Spock, a brotherhood made deeper by their empathy with similar losses.

Like I said, not what the writers intended, just how I like to look at it.

We already know that the timeline can be altered - so I wouldn't be surprised if he lived.
I doubt it. They've only done that to move the Eugenics Wars out of the 90s because it never happened IRL.

They're sticking to canon in other places, like Kirk meeting Pike as a fleet captain.
