DC Movies - To Infinity and Beyond

I haven't had cable TV (US) for a year-and-a-half or so. One thing I learned is the Chromecast is a very capable device of hosting apps completely on its own, 99+% of the time I use it I do not "cast" to the device, I just use the device itself to run the apps. Maybe it's obvious but it wasn't to me because everything I read about it only talked about using it for casting. There is also a dongle available to use it with direct ethernet if you prefer, I myself just use it with WiFi but it's available. There's an initial cost but I have found it well worth it personally.

Yeah, a friend of mine in Germany told me about that. Voice searching and everything. It looks pretty nifty, and it's something worth considering. Thank you for the tip.

Well, I might give SkyShowtime a shot at some point I guess. Right now the biggest issue for me is that my TV doesn't have the app for it, and I think my model is too old to get that particular app. Not a big fan of things like chromecasts and other devices, I prefer to just use the smarthub on my tv with a cable to the modem. More stable streaming this way.

I just plug the laptop straight into the tv with an hdmi cable. And you could also plug it into the modem directly. But I guess if you don't have space for that or don't have a laptop with an hdmi port that won't help.

Both is an option. But I'll wait and see what happens. :)

idk, a laptop or a two inch disc with a remote control?

He was the first dual-identity hero and a direct inspiration for Zorro, but no, apparently there was no mask, or so I'm told.

Correct, He's a master of disguise instead. But it almost doesn't matter because we have all just collectively decided on what his costume should be. Which is a suit with a wide brimmed hat and big feather, and a domino mask, all in Scarlett, with a pimpernel on his lapel of course.

What's your reference for that? I can't find any photos online of such a costume. I thought maybe you were thinking of Daffy Duck as the Scarlet Pumpernickel, but that's basically a Zorro costume with a red mask and cummerbund and a blue shirt. The feathered hats are worn by Daffy's civilian persona and Sylvester as the villain.

No source, I should have worded that differently. I feel there's just this general collective unconscious idea of what the costume would be if there was one, and that particular one is the version I see in my head.
but as for other expressions in media:

There's also Darkwing Duck's very first version (flashback) of his costume

Here's a version from Phineas and Ferb, with the big hat and feather
https://www.nerdsandbeyond.com/2020...a-spooktacular-good-time-in-druselsteinoween/

Like I said collective unconscious. If you dress something like that, everyone who knows the character will get who you are even thought the costume has no connection to the book.
The costume color is obvious, the big hat and feather are probably influenced by his choice of a sword as his weapon. The Pimpernel works in France, France+sword=Musketeer, Musketeer=big hat with feather.

No surprise the image comes from Darkwing Duck, since that show was a direct knockoff of The Scarlet Pumpernickel and Chuck Jones's other Daffy-as-inept-hero cartoons. That "Pimperbill" image is just a palette-swapped Darkwing allusion. And since Phineas and Ferb was also Disney, it stands to reason it reflected the same influence. So I guess that supports the idea that the image does come largely from Pumpernickel, even though that costume owed more to Zorro.

I'm in Kirkland, Washington. That's the city where COVID was first identified. Our air quality is currently "unhealthy for everyone," and my asthma is acting up. With the inhalers I have, I can keep my voice and breathe okay. If I have a strong attack, I could land in the ER. I'm hoping to avoid that.
Stay safe as you can.

USA Today has published its list of 50 Best Superhero Movies Ever:

https://www.usatoday.com/story/ente...fKobMFKYc&mibextid=Zxz2cZ#llkez2bm27808uwzykv

While I might quibble with some of the rankings, I heartily endorse their top three:

1. Superman (1978)
2. The Dark Knight
3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Interestingly, Blue Beetle makes the list at #48 and none of the Zack Snyder directed DC Extended Universe movies make the list at all, while his Watchmen comes in at #45. Of the current cycle of DC movies, Shazam comes in at #41, Wonder Woman at #27, and The Suicide Squad (2021) at #25, and The Joker and The Batman at #42 and #16 respectively. The only other Superman movie to make the list, Superman II, is ranked at #23. Of the other Batman movies, Batman (1989) is ranked #6, Batman Begins is ranked #18, Batman Returns comes in at # 21, and The Lego Batman Movie at #29.

Do I actually live in a universe where Blue Beetle is a better movie than Man of Steel? Or is USA Today desperately trying to increase Blue Beetle's box office?

For one thing, Watchmen is a Zack Snyder directed DC movie.
As for Blue Beetle being above the entire MoS cycle:

Agreed. Blue Beetle was garbage that is a disaster as an adaptation. Then again, that was a list--including any of the Burton/Schumacher Bat-films[/i]--that is not to be taken seriously.

One never knows. Some might see it as "needing" to be saved when the movie-going public made their firm decision: Blue Beetle was a major mistake.

I haven't even seen Blue Beetle.

I'm just pondering whether it can be that good.

This ranker does have opinions and seems to think very highly of The Batman. Personally I would not put it higher than Joker ( no 'The' ).

I agree. I do not get how DC could not get a more talented Latino/a writer. As I wrote last Friday, it isn't just that its bad--it is offensive. It uses stereotypes and tropes for laughs in a way that completely undermines the message of the importance of family. I watched it with my wife, kids and niece all of whom are native Spanish speakers groaned multiple times throughout the movie. In both languages, the dialogue was predictable. The story of the grandmother's dubious revolutionary background was nothing short of insulting to people who come from countries with genuinely violent backgrounds or presents.

I can't imagine how bad Batgirl must have been for this movie to be the one chosen for release.

This was a premise that could have done for the Latin community what Black Lightning did for the Black American community, and now we will probably never see the character on screen again in the foreseeable future. If, however, Gunn sees the potential of Blue Beetle as a part of the DC universe, I hope that most of the cast returns as they deserve the opportunity to do something better.
