What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

Una Una Una

I dont watch SWN because they ruined Number One. (To me) her name is Number One. The mysteriousness is radical to the character.

I *was* going to give them a chance until that short when the put "Una" (I hate the name) and (of all of them) Spock into a turbo singimg Major General

And they didnt even try to justify that with spores(*) or polywater

Also I just learned shes an AUGMENT yeesh

(*) Omicron spores NOT disco spore drive. That would be stupid
Eh, they haven't really dug that deep. After Ortegas she's the most underdeveloped character.

I still question the notion that SNW M'Benga and TOS M'Benga are the same person (as opposed to simply being relatives: it's hardly unusual for medicine to be a "family business"; I have a friend, a retired gynecologist, whose uncle had been a general surgeon).

"Word of God" notwithstanding: after all, pre-Datalore, "Word of God" (my understanding was that it was in the writers' guide) was that Data had been created by unknown advanced entities as an atonement for accidentally destroying the colony where he'd been found. Every detail of which lasted a dozen episodes.
I have no controversial Star Trek opinions any more, but I have a similar theory which I have explained in more detail previously in the SNW forum.

I believe that the unofficial pet name that a Captain may give his executive officer, ‘Number One’, is a transferable designation. For example, Commander Riker was unofficially Captain Picard’s ‘Number One’.

I think that Una may not be the same Number One that we see in ‘The Cage’. Captain Pike may have just learnt to fondly, if somewhat shallowly, refer to the new executive officer who eventually replaces Una as Number One, too.

I also have a controversial theory about the Gorn, but the writers keep ruining my theories so I would rather keep that one to myself now… oh the pain of having my decades old established head canon destroyed at the whim of the current nu-Trek writers. :wah: :D

I disagree that Una is underdeveloped. You can get a lot from a character just by their mannerisms and how they carry themselves. Una definitely fits into this category.

Besides the obvious augmentation status, she has shown herself to be intelligent, quick thinking on her feet, loyal, knows how to lead people, a problem solver before something becomes a problem, and is confident in her job and herself enough to tell the captain when he is wrong. And very respectful, because she only does this in private.

It's very easy to see her as knowing everything that goes on in the ship. She reminds of Ivanova from BABYLON 5. "The day something happens on this station without me already knowing about it... worry." This is Commander Chin-Riley, too.

Reminding me of Ivanova reminds me of how bad an actor Claudia Christian is.
Romjin is much better and has better material. She's does a lot with what she's been given. But what she's been given isn't on the same level as the others. Navia is in a similar situation. She owns pretty much every scene she's in.

Ummmm, this is a very odd Controversial Opinion.

Like has been said, if "The Cage" hadn't been rejected, we would've found out more about Number One for sure. Especially since she was the First Officer! Not exactly a small role.

I don't know. I like the series we ended up getting, but if Number One were a main character in this series, it might've made TOS less sexist because one of the Big Three would be a woman. That would've been huge in the 1960s.

If we could see a series made in a "What If?" reality, I'd want to see how that version of TOS would've turned out. Just like I'd want to see Phase II.

But back to actual reality. In SNW, my three favorite characters are Una, La'an, and April.

If nothing else listen to it like a radio play. I think a greater percentage of TAS stories are top notch than actual TOS. (I should check that math.)

Thanks, that’s what I’m gonna do. Going to rewatch and see if I can adjust my perceptions of the animation. I’d love if they one day redid the animation reusing the original voice performances (but redid the music, too; it’s exceedingly 70’s and not in a good way).

Oddly enough, I feel like those two movies are the most like an episode of their respective series.

Never felt that. I mean the ridiculous special effects of V are undisputed. What you often hear also are complaints that these films are highly illogical. I would agree, but that also applies to others. The whole time travel stuff from The Voyage Home, Generations and First Contact just doesn't make any sense either. I love Generations for overall mood and production design but the Nexus stuff is so illogical that you prefer not to think about it.

Insurrection feels like "The Ensigns of Journey's End" and Star Trek V is "The Way to Adonais" probably. Also V is the cousin to that pre-TMP script where Jesus was a space probe.

The only part of the time travel in Voyage Home that doesn't make sense to me is the slingshot time travel method itself, which I assume most people just aren't going to be bothered by since: 1) it's basically the same idea that people had already seen in Superman and 2) Star Trek is built on obviously nonsensical technologies anyway, so if people can just accept that transporters work because that's what the movie says they can do the same for whatever method of time travel the movie says is possible.

And it's a previously established ability.

(could not find the edit button) the point is I don't want to know anything about Number One. She was perfect in The Cage. SWN wants to tell us the color of her panties
Well, these certainly are…opinions.
