Controversial Opinion: I find the 24th/25th century characters to be incredibly boring, for the most part.
With the exception of DS9, most of the characters were about as exciting as dry toast. TNG and VOY were clearly held back by the Roddenberrian sensibilities.
The pompousness of the characters is almost palpable. The older I get, I even find it hard to like characters such as Picard, a man I hero worshipped as a child. Now struggle to find any likable traits in the character.
This is all opposed to characters from the 22nd and 23rd centuries, whom I find warm and approachable. Archer, Trip, T'Pol, Hoshi, Phlox, Reed, Mayweather, were people I could relate too. People who you would want to be friends with. Same can be said of Pike, Una, Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Scotty, La'an, Ortegas, Sulu, Chekov, McCoy, Chapel, M'Benga, Hemmer, Pelia, etc.
Even Discovery manages to have characters that feel like actual living, breathing beings with emotion. Unlike the mannequins of the 24th century, DS9 excluded.
