Spoilers Well, I guess we know now... (SNW "Subspace Rhapsody" spoilers)

Arena has been "shredded to pieces" only if every Gorn, every species of Gorn, is identical to the one seen in the episode. Why is it so difficult to imagine other kinds of Gorn existing as depicted on SNW? Is it because it goes against decades of fan assumptions? The actual text of the single episode in which a single Gorn appeared is more than flexible enough to accommodate what SNW has presented.

Yup. We still know next to nothing about Gorn culture. For all we know, "Gorn" might be a political identity applied to several different reptilian species, the way "Xindi" is a political identity applied to several different species.

Maybe the reason Kirk said " I face the creature the Metrons called a Gorn" is due to it not looking like the Gorn he was familiar with?

Oh, just go back and change maybe two lines of dialogue in "Arena," and everything fits fine.

Do that with everything that "contradicts" SNW and let's get on with the business of living.
