Star Trek Leaving Crave?

I'm ok with this. Paramount+ being attached to Amazon Prime Video, is a hell of a better service compared to Crave.

It means one more thing I can't afford anymore.

If it's accurate. If CTV SciFi loses first-broadcast rights for SNW, PRO, LDS, SFA, S31 and whatever else.

I know Paramount wants it all in one place, but given that Bell had the rights for 30+ years and was accessible via cable & Crave (both via cable and CTV nationally), asking viewers to shell up for more money feels like a kick in the pants. And to think Bell helped produce Discovery too, and this is the thanks they get, not getting the license renewed.

Well there we go, then. This was generally expected, but it's good to have confirmation via a real announcement.

I wonder if it does? The announcement repeatedly referred to it as the "streaming home", and nowhere does it seem to say that P+ is the "exclusive provider" of Star Trek or anything like that.... and you'd think they would be saying that, if it was true.

Now granted, I wouldn't be surprised if it's no longer on regular TV, but the article doesn't seem to say that, so there's still the possibility that Bell has an agreement in place to air the shows on their cable channel?

It doesn't really impact me either way, since my cable has already been cut, but I would like others who rely on the cable airings to still be able to see it that way, if possible.

Well, sure, but in that regard we're no different than the rest of the world, so...? I do like Crave, and there are a few other shows I'd like to watch before I cancel, but I won't be carrying it permanently, so it looks like I'll actually be saving $10 per month.

I have Prime. My understanding is that subscribing directly through Paramount and subscribing through Prime are the same price, so is there actually any benefit with going through Prime?

Also, just a general question... I assume that since SNW is on Crave till September 9, that they will still be getting the new SNW episodes? I see the announcement says that P+ will be getting the new SNW episodes, so I'm assuming they'll be on both services? Just want to make sure I'm still OK on my current subscription, or if I need to sign up with P+ by Thursday.

Not sure. When I first got P+, it was through Amazon as I thought that was the only way to get it on my TV.

Guess we'll know at 3am on Thursday morning.

Bell has confirmed a couple weeks ago all remaining new episodes of SNW are still going to stream on Crave. SNW itself will remain on Crave until Sep 9, according to the app.

The only benefit is convenience if you already have Amazon Prime. You can easily do an add on subscription and have it integrate within Prime without needing new sign in details/password or installing another app.

Another possible benefit is if you are using a media streaming device ( likely an older platform) that supports Prime but not the Paramount plus app. Otherwise yeah no real difference price wise.

I meant in the sense that Crave is also available via cable package through cable providers and accessable via set-top boxes, in addition to being available separately. So yes, that deal was quite a bit different.

Oh, I see.

I do agree that it is kinda sad if it does end up being gone from CTV Sci-if Channel altogether… it really would be the end of an era. It was a good run, though, so I guess we can be thankful for that.

Who knows, if the predictions are true about Paramount+’s future, maybe Bell will be able to get the rights back in a year or two. :)

I’m just not going to make the effort. It might be inconvenient to Paramount, but moving Star Trek from Crave to P+ is inconvenient to me.

I don’t like the move, but I also don’t like the thought of there being new Star Trek out there that I can’t see, so I will dutifully follow it to its new home. I just wish P+ had more content that I was interested in, like Crave does. It looks like it’ll just be “the Star Trek streaming app” for me.

At least it’s only $10 (for now).

I can't remember if it was this thread or one of the others I mentioned this, but since this one is active, I'll post it here. I had mentioned earlier that the Trek shows were listed as being available on CTV Sci-Fi's On Demand content until around mid-July. That has since been extended to September 7. That includes SNW as well as Disco, Picard, Lower Decks and even Prodigy. Not sure if that has any meaning in the grand scheme of things or if that means CTV Sci-Fi will continue to carry new Trek episodes or not, but I figured it was worth sharing.

In the event that it is only Paramount+ carrying new Trek episodes from here on, that would only be a minor convenience for me. I had been subscribing to Paramount+ early as that was a convenient way for me to get into NCIS. After I was caught up, I ended having cancel my subscription due to credit card issues. While those issues have since been resolved, I never did renew my subscription due to there not being anything else I was interested in checking out that I could not watch in other places (like on cable, or whatever). I suppose I could renew it for the Trek shows, and there are now a few other shows on Paramount+ I have a mild interest in checking out. Not enough to subscribe to the service to watch those specifically, though were I already subscribed I'd check out. So it would kind of suck if CTV Sci-Fi was no longer running the new episodes, but I guess it's not the worse thing that could happen, and like a good Borg drone I could adapt accordingly.

Crave is part of my Internet package via Bell. I signed up through the door to door program, it is actually cheaper for me to keep it than to cancel - I looked into it this year as my bill had been creeping up.

Yeah, I agree. The one hopeful thing to note is that streaming rights are usually negotiated separately from broadcasting rights, and being that Paramount+ is a streaming service, this could mean Bell still retains the broadcasting rights. Although these days the line is blurred, and it could be Canada was the only one still actually broadcasting the new stuff. Paramount might not care about that so much. I think the key is that they repeatedly call Paramount+ the "Streaming Home".

As it should. To be fair, I have downloaded, quite legally, several Trek seasons from iTunes, so it is possible to use the term without automatically implying a…nefarious intent.

Thanks.

That's why no warning or personal admonition was given.

Can anyone confirm if audio description is available on Star Trek content on Paramount plus Canada? Crave had it available on the newer shows and they credit the actual description service as being provided to them by “Paramount plus” so I’m assuming yes?

I just hope Paramount + does not take Star Trek down with it. It would certainly get more views on other platforms.

I get it. But I can’t see my self doing much but subbing for a couple of months at most and then unsubbing. P+ isn’t a priority compared to other services for me. And that’s with another show on P+ that I am interested in (the new Kiefer Sutherland show).
