Crew Rank Insignia?

I could be very wrong on this, but tonight's episode might have been the first time that we've seen an unnamed member of the medical staff wear a blue uniform, like M'Benga, rather than a white uniform, like Chapel.
We've seen lightblueshirts on medical staff before.

I'm not entirely sure that tonight's episode didn't just retcon that line from the premiere out of existence.
I've had the impression it was retconned after the first episode, although I might need to rewatch "Spock Amok" as it might also be mentioned she's a civilian there.

Is Pelia a full commander? Una (a Lt Commander) tells her she (Una) outranks her during Ep 2.06. Is Una talking about position as XO rather than actual rank then.?

The executive officer (XO) on a ship would be second in command behind the commanding officer (CO). All Department heads report to the XO. Pelia at most is the head of the Engineering Department (Chief Engineer) and would report directly to the XO.

Yup.

Rank not be as big of a factor as position of executive officer.

I think the cuff rank insignia has always been a weird choice, as they need to be sewn into every uniform, which means you need to create a plethora of tunics for each rank. The Discovery style badges with the pip rank insignia on them was cleaner and simpler. Way easier to manufacture dozens of deltas than whole tunics.

Okay. Just odd that Una's saying "Look how well I did compared to you because you have crumbs on your uniform" etc, when in fact Pelia holds the substantive rank.

We've only ever heard Pelia's rank mentioned in (informal) dialogue, so we don't really know if she's a full commander or a lieutenant commander.

Normally we'd look to the rank insignia for clarification, but this is SNW, so...

Except difficult to read at a distance.

Which is totally fair. Lots of ways to make the pips more visible. Even with how hard they were to make out, they at least made more sense than the cuffs do right now. :rommie:

Sadly nothing will beat the 90's era pips on the collar. It was a simple but elegant design.

Of all the various Trek ranks I like them least because you need a HD publicity shot to tell the rank of a person.
Also, you need to see their chest, which is a big down side compared to the collar, which was visible in every close up shot.

I agree.

Though I'd've prefer that they hadn't reopened the "missing rank gap" between Captain and Commander that TOS fixed by not paralleling Anglophone naval ranks exactly (I would have had ENS with a black pip up to Captain* with three gold pips)

* At least for the big ships like the Galaxy, small ships like the Intrepid and Nova-classes could have had "Captains" with two gold pips and one black (XOs/DH wearing this rank would be Commanders).

I do kind of wish that when they introduced the pips in TNG, that they had based them on the TOS rank stripes, rather than the US Navy rank stripes. That would have provided a nice bit of continuity.

The other problem with exactly adapting the TOS rank system either would be either having no rank pips for Ensign (which is undesirable regardless of what rank -- if any -- you think should have that position*) or removing the rank of Lieutenant JG (as in TMP).

* Midshipman, Acting Ensign, (Civilian) Specialist, Crewman... delete as appropriate.
