Funny, I thought this was the Marvel thread...
My bad. I thought it was the DC thread!
I have to wonder if this recent streak of box office failures is going to make studios like Disney reconsider just how big and how many of these megabudget movies that need to make almost a billion dollars just to break even they're going to continue to make.
I just checked and it was made for Amazon Prime, but it did come out in theaters before they put it up there.
I went twice, myself. I very rarely do that.
I don't think I've ever seen a movie in the theaters more than once. I go once for the experience of seeing it on a big screen, but especially with how expensive tickets are now, I'm not going to spend that kind of money more than once. After that, I'm happy to spend a fraction of that, or no extra money, and watch it on my TV.
Ah! Though I wonder if the cinematic release was just to render it Oscar-eligible, rather than in any expectation of big takings. But it was definitely a critical hit, and rightly so - if you’d told me I’d be hooked by a film about the rivalry between sports shoes in the 1980s, I’d have laughed at you, but it was superb.
Honestly I'd be happier to see him focus back on writing and directing. The guy co-wrote an oscar winning all time classic right out of the gate, he clearly has a talent for storytelling beyond just acting in front of a camera. While I certainly haven't seen everything he's directed, I thought 'Argo' and 'The Town' were solid movies, and would love to see more from him. Also, I couldn't care less about the box office. There are very many high grossing movies I will never watch because they're obviously terrible, and most people will forget them inside of a week anyway.

Good Will Hunting is still one of my favorite movies. As Ben and Matt say, you gotta do the safe picture and then you can to the art picture and sometimes you do Reindeer Games.
Affleck is one of those actors/filmmakers who done a lot of good movies, but also been in a lot of awful stuff.

I feel the same about a good number of both Marvel and DC films in the past seven years.
And yet you keep watching...
Actually, I haven't watched a comic book movie since "The Suicide Squad". That had pretty much cooled any desire to watch more comic book movies for the past two years. I saw it after "Shang-Chi" on streaming. Wait . . . I did see "DC's Super Pets". And I did enjoy that movie. But it was an animated film. As for the live action variety, I haven't seen one since "The Suicide Squad".

That's true of a lot of actors and directors. What matters in the long run is: were they awful because of what they were doing, or in spite it?
Also Ben's DVD commentary on 'Armageddon' is legendary and makes sitting though that movie worth it all on it's own.

It's like who was popular in highschool during the reunion. When you're there you realise that the odd ones out where the kids with a actual heart and story that you remember. The average jock and cheerleader are long forgotten, except that you have this idea of someone you once thought acted cool and looked good but you no longer remember who they actually were.
I've never been to such a reunion (nor would I have any interest in such), so I wouldn't know. Also; I'm British and cheerleaders & jocks aren't a thing here.
All I know is that some of the best and most highly regarded movies ever made were flops or at least disappointments during their initial release, while very few box office toppers in a given season have a shelf life that extends much beyond a few years, if that.
All box office receipts prove is what people were interesting in going to see over other things during a certain period. Whether the movie was good or not is often neither here nor there.
Phenomenal backstory. A shame Gunn never had the chance to finish that short film. Would've been a great companion piece for Vol. 3.
Well, the actors strike is on. Time to push out the release schedule again!
