Paul Wesley's incarnation of James T. Kirk

apparently years later they realized NBC had a flawed ratings system and Trek was actually performing on par or above expectations with the viewers they were targeting but at the time NBC genuinely believed the show was struggling

I'm not saying you're wrong, but are you sure?

I've heard this before, but I'm sure I heard it from Marc Cushman... rendering it false or at least highly suspect.

Yeah.... I've never understood the whole Jim Carey comparison.

I think he looks pretty good. I can buy him as a young Jim Kirk.

I think it's the Chin/lips that many are seeing the similarities.
I personally really liked Paul in the Vampire Diaries. We shall see how he does this season. He is not trying to recreate Shatners Kirk. Which is fine. He should not. People need to give him a chance to settle into the role, before writing him off. Plus we don't even know how far they are gonna take Kirk during SNW or after.

No, it's not really true.

It's based on the network having done demographic analysis later and concluding that Trek had unusually good demos. But they knew while it was running that the viewership ran toward higher income/education types than average, and prepared marketing materials for sponsors to that effect.

It was my understanding that William Shatner had script approval and stole a lot lines that were meant for other cast members. This behavior was part of the reason the rest of the cast despised him.
To be fair, the guest actor William Windom (played Commodore Decker) in TOS S2 The Doomsday Machine, said that both William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy were 'line counting' on set and approaching production staff to change things and give them each more lines.
