The Vulcan - Character Highlights

T'Pree - 41 year old Vulcan female, working on the transporter system and replicator systems. specializing in particle resequencing theory. T'Pree is well educated in a classical foundation with strong knowledge of Vulcan history and contemporary affairs.

In E3 - A Pon Too Farr, she reveals that she suffered the loss of both her husband and unborn child due to a failed airlock that deprived her of oxygen. The physical trauma affected her natural cycles and she is no longer able to go into a Pon Farr or have plak tow.

T'Pree is practical and friendly, but does not get close to friends. She suffered more from her tragedy than she will admit to or even know. T'Pree is quiet, a bit formal and stiff and almost completely sterile of emotions, even more than other Vulcans. However, she will step forward with needed information or a historical perspective when she feels it will benefit the group.

Her reasons for staying on with the crew of the Vulcan are unknown to her, but she feels better in her ship-board apartment then the thought of returning to her empty home on Vulcan. She would not be able to identify such an illogical response, and would tell her shipmates that she believes in S'Talla's cause. She often quotes common Vulcan idioms such as "Logic dictates," or "it is only logical."

Her hobbies include chess, learning about history and solving problems in electrical circuits. Her life's experiences are limited, until S'Talla's hijacking of the V5-Beta, to her home planet of Vulcan and work on satellite stations and in-system construction projects. Travel and exposure to other cultures and the strengthening bond of ship life will slowly begin to relieve T'Pree of that unconscious anxiety that has filled her since losing her family. In essence, she has a shell she will eventually emerge from that could have a real physical effect, as well as an effect upon her well suppressed emotions.

Thank you 0110. It is very gratifying to know they are appreciated. They also help me refine my characters' personalities and backgrounds. It keeps everything organized and makes it easy to refer to them when needed.

Professor Kazzak - 181 year old male Vulcan scientist supposedly hired to design and work on the inertial dampening and gravitation systems. He quickly completed that job, to spend most of his time locked away in a storage bay he converted to a private laboratory with Dr. Gödel. The two are working on his theoretical gravitational energy induction experiments. He is a leading theoretical physicist working on experiments in gravity, curved space and theories of discrete variable time progression. He is obsessively dedicated, isolated and preoccupied with his work. He is a bit of an eccentric, wearing welder-like eye protection most of the time.

Kazzak's "safety" goggles have a heads-up display with built-in tricorder functions and hexi-core positronic nano-processors that provides him with graphically augmented reality features. His goggles include an AI chaos engine that can model the local environment, analyze and predict a set of probable outcomes as much as forty minutes in advance. It accomplishes this feature with a predictive algorithm that combines data about the local area events and information pulled from the Vulcan central database, with psychological and physical science as well as a continuously updated analysis of recorded short term history. Basically, it can read the room and model what is most likely to happen next, as a graphic overlay to what the professor sees in real time. Typically, the goggles generate three, most likely, scenarios and play the one with the highest probability first. It, of course, also acts as a dynamic welders shield and eye protection, and PADD. He has built a second pair for Dr. Gödel.

Kazzak has great admiration for the abilities of his assistant. He is truly fond of Dr. Gödel, and takes time, only with her, to mentor and teach what he knows. He tolerates other people when he must and bruskly dismisses others when he can. He will come out of his lab only to inspect or participate in a problem that greatly intrigues him, such as the effort to capture an NZ sentry satellite without the use of man made energy, or the acquisition of the mythical Vaikar-Kau-Bureki.

Kazzak collects antique technologies to better understand how the foundation of current scientific knowledge came to where it currently is. His collection of antique scientific instruments is impressive.

He is famous within the scientific community, but his presence on the V5-Beta during the battle at the Astroways Construction Station has been covered up with the insertion in the Vulcan Database of a record that has him away on an extended sabbatical. The Vulcan world is unaware of his presence on Vulcan V5-B373. He just assume to keep it that way.

Kazzak was the theoretical architect of Vulcan's cloaking device, but he is not inclined to volunteer such information. If asked, he will easily confirm his role, but until such occasions come up, he hardly gives the thought any time out of his primary goals. It's a non-issue, as far as the Professor cares.

I remember reading one of these stories and really enjoying it, and then not finding time to getting around to reading any of the others because I'm useless. :( Glad to see a full story contents list in this thread though, so I'll use that handy little resource to keep track of where I am as I read through them all!

wow when can we expect a sequel?

Dr. Francesca Gödel - 41 year old female Earthling of Afro-German descent. She is the great x7 granddaughter of the famous mathematician and logician Kurt Gödel. She graduated with her bachelor's degree at the age of 14. Her doctoral thesis, Multi-dimensional Temporal Energy Dispersion (energy that travels into the future, the past, spread through the present physical world, and echoes into parallel-dimensional worlds), was defended successfully at the age of 19 while studying at the Vienna University of Technology. She is the smartest crew member aboard the Vulcan with a uniquely persistent eidetic memory she enhances with an unconscious mnemonic and mental method of loci. Professor Kazzak would be the first to point out that she is smarter than he is; Francesca would be the last.

Francesca has a mild phobia of people, intensified by crowds. She can be around others, but her anthrophobia expresses itself with stuttering. Francesca does, in fact, like people, she is just afraid of them. She can even be physically expressive with others in times of high emotions, such as when she hugged S'Talla and Sam after the initial success of hers and professor Kazzak's connection of their gravity energy inductors.

Her doctoral thesis caught the attention of Professor Kazzak when a colleague gave a speech at a conference on the Future of Science in Education. Her paper was used by the speaker as an example of the absurd ideas graduate students were allowed to propose and pursue. The speaker was ridiculing, not the concepts of the paper, as much as the scientists and educators who approved the thesis subject, as well as the defense of the paper by the "too young student". The speaker pointed to the fact that nobody understood what the paper said.

Kazzak sat impatiently in the audience, hardly paying attention, when he was suddenly reminded of a letter he had received a few years earlier, from a young Earth master's student who criticized his own paper as nonsensical and unintelligible. She had wondered, in her letter, that Kazzak was really a Vulcan. When Kazzak realized that the brash young critic and the author of the paper, held up as evidence by the conference speaker, were the same, and that she had to have actually come to make sense of his "unintelligible" theories, theories he was certain none of his colleagues understood, he decided he would do everything in his power to bring her to Vulcan and make her his assistant on his next project.

Her relationship with the professor has become like a father/daughter bond. Francesca loves her mentor deeply and knows that, in his Vulcan way, he returns the feeling. Samantha is her link, her linchpin, that connects her to the rest of the crew on the Vulcan. Francesca generally avoids connecting with others, including the crew, but she is most comfortable with the others when Samantha Kelly is present. She doesn't always understand Sam's relaxed and adventurous approach to life, but Francesca is comfortable with Samantha's intellect and computer and electronic engineering abilities. Her respect translates into a level of trust almost at a level as her comfort with the Professor.

Liking the character highlights. It's tremendously valuable to know your characters well. But it's the story that makes them come to life. I'm very much looking forward to the next installment.

I'm in process of discovering my characters for Star Beagle Adventures. The difficulty is now that they've had a few happy moments on Deep Space 9, I'm finding it hard to throw them back into the various hells that await to challenge them. Not all of their adventures will be pure terror... but this next one will be.

I've hit on the bizarre idea of using YES song lyrics to inspire their adventures...

Thanks!! rbs

Spalloz - 49 year old Vulcan Male. He works with the life support systems and does general maintenance and repair, working under T'Pia.

As part of Vulcan's crew, he takes a shift at the sensor scans and works with Randool Harrix on mechanical maintenance in Engineering. Spalloz is usually found in Engineering where he monitors and maintains the matter synthesizing and reprocessing systems. His closest friend was Spirro, who left to return home to planet Vulcan, along with a number of other male Vulcan technicians.

Spalloz was born with Kerker's Disease, a rare recessive genetic condition preventing him from entering the Pon Farr breeding cycle. He and Sadek share this condition. His choice to stay aboard Vulcan came from his growing interest in Randool's Maybellene project and a lack of commitments on planet Vulcan coupled with a sense of belonging among the engineers on the Yon-Ha'gel Project. He has no mate and most of his family are remote inhabitants of an off-planet Vulcan mining colony. Spalloz's condition made him a prime choice for Operations to strand aboard the V5-Beta when S'Talla and her group hijacked the ship.

Spalloz is artistic, he enjoys painting and sculpting. He has been helping Randool with Maybellene and has considered building his own racer to give Randool something to compete against. Racing for pleasure is not a forgotten pleasure on Vulcan, but it is extremely rare and not considered a logical pastime by most. A few Vulcan's still consider the practice a reasonable way to improve on the technology of transportation.

Spalloz's friendship with Randool will grow, in place of his missing friend Spirro. He is otherwise typical of Vulcan personalities with little expression of strong feelings. He often uses the words, "doubtful", and "without a doubt" to indicate disagreement or agreement.

I've been thinking about publishing something similar about the characters in Star Beagle Adventures. Quite unexpectedly, I found that it wasn't just about the U.S.S. Beagle, but also included two other ships. I have added Pel, a character who showed up in a single episode of Deep Space 9, to the regular cast.

Still looking forward to more Vulcan stories. Thanks!! rbs

...the new species from the Epsilon-Hydra system, and their culture. You will like them, I think...

I've been averaging a scene a day for SBA. No idea why, after a year of total writer's block, it's just pouring out now.

I am a big fan of your critter design! Definitely looking forward to your Epihydra...

Thanks!! rbs
