"I've nothing to say to you O'Brien, I think you know why"????

I dunno, a starship can warp away from a threat...

Certainly after "Emissary", there was always a very real possibility that something could pop out of the wormhole at any moment and turn the station into a floating debris field.

Will and Miles are two of my favorite characters so this scene always bothers me more than it should.

Like I wish in What You Leave Behind they would have just inserted a scene of Will Riker having a beer with Miles so you know they are cool

Although, I suppose he found out later it was Tom and I should let it go.

Or Tom and Kira could have been having a beer. Tom and O'Brien weren't on the Enterprise at the same time, right? And she did say she'd look for him. I'm sure as a prisoner he didn't hear anything about how the Obsidian Order and Tal Shiar attack on the Founder's homeworld turned out.

Yes, they tied up a lot of loose ends at the end, but they left the fate of Tom Riker up in the air. Given how throughly Cardassia got stomped first by the Klingons and then by the Klingon-Federation-Romulan alliance as the Domion war wound up, I suppose most likely is he got killed in one of the battles.

Miles was not aware that he would soon get more than he bargained for.

Tom was using subterfuge, and apparently it worked because O'Brien was too dumb to follow up as to why he thought Riker had a beef with him.

Riker outranked O'Brien and Kira was there as well. Not really the time to be questioning an officer who outranks you.

True. My point was that O’Brien never bothered to follow up on why he thought Riker was angry at him until it was revealed that it was Tom.

From Defiant.
Tom Riker says this to O'Brien, who scuttles off sharpish.. As opposed to asking what the hell.

Is there any basis for Rikers animosity ( as in was there anything that happened between O'Brien and Riker to explain why our outspoken Chief was not confused about all this? )

Probably because O’Brien was a transporter chief, and Thomas Riker was trapped in a godforsaken hellhole for eight years or so because of a transporter glitch…

So naturally, he was probably just trying to get rid of O’Brien so he could be alone with Kira so he could phaser the hell out of her and steal the Defiant, but his unspoken resentment against transporters probably surfaced when he improvised that statement. I’m surprised the character didn’t develop a Broccoli-type fear of Transporters… but the character was only shown in two episodes of two different shows. And at the time “Riker” blurted that out, we didn’t know which Riker it was. I started suspecting after that, though.

I thought O’Brien would not have waddled away puzzled, he would have confronted whichever Riker that was…

I don't think he really had the time before things went sideways? Isn't it under two minutes between this dialogue and Riker phasering Kira?

Just long enough for O'Brien to get safely off the Defiant.

Eddington and Riker both phasered Kira, out of nowhere by surprise. It's amazing she still liked Starfleet officers enough to wear their uniform in season 7.

Exactly. Tom would have presumably done his research and know DS9's Chief Engineer was stationed on The Enterprise with his doppelganger. He's running a high risk, time sensitive mission for The Maqui. He sees O'Brien - a scenario I'm sure he hoped to avoid. Best bet is play the rank card. In that scenario - particularly with another senior officer present - it's enough to leave O'Brien stunned / befuddled.

If that were me, I'd probably walk away feeling embarrassed (that sort of out of left field comment would make most people feel awkward even if they hadn't a clue what it was about) and think to myself "WTF?", rather than assuming he wasn't Will Riker. I'd probably think to catch up with him at a more opportune time privately and ask what his beef was. More than enough time for Tom to execute his plan.
