Spoilers ST Strange New Worlds - Starships and Technology Season Two Discussion

I don't get why the Kurtzman team are hellbent on portraying Kor as already a HemQuch before TOS. The Kelvin comic Nero did it, as did the post-Into Darkness arc of the ongoing Kelvin comic. Then the DIS season 2 follow-up comic Aftermath did the same for Rynar and Kor alike per Kol-Sha and Kol both being HemQuch on the streaming episodes. Come the hell on!
Hell bent, eh? I think they're trying to make the best of a ridiculous situation.

What? I guess I could rationalize Klingons inventing a cannon that would launch the severed heads of their enemies back at them, but still…

Not according to ENT. The smooth heads used to be ridged heads until the Augment virus changed them. And at some point after TOS but before TNG they all went back to being ridged heads.

All the Klingons we see on screen post-TOS, which is a vanishingly small proportion of the total population. Obviously both varieties coexisted at one point—there's no reason to speculate that they don't continue to do so.

Yes, abberations. Mutants.

The KlinXons.

The name is a WIP.

Except for the fact that in TOS, Kor, Kang and Koloth were smooth heads, but by TUC they were ridged heads. And we never see smooth head Klingons ever again. This implies that any formerly ridged Klingons infected with the virus have been cured by the time of TUC.

But let’s not kid ourselves. The whole ENT Augment trilogy makes no sense and was absolutely not needed as any kind of explanation about the differences in Klingon makeup. Worf’s humorous line about ‘we don’t talk about it’ was far more effective an explanation than the convoluted mess we got in ENT, which has been completely ignored anyway in DSC.

I might be in the minority, but I never had a huge problem with FASA's explanation that the smooth headed TOS Klingons were human/Klingon fusions, genetically engineered with the goal of helping the Klingons to understand their enemies better. They also made Romulan/Klingon and Orion/Klingon fusions, although it's kind of implied they're either less common than the human fusions or less often seen. Certainly the imperial (ridged) Klingons tended to regard them as lesser beings to an extent.

I thought that was a great explanation, but even with that, I also have no issues with variety in Klingon phenotypes because if they utilized genetic engineering then variety is to be expected, rather than one uniform skull ridge shape.

Heh. I love reading the observation on Memory Alpha that ENT 4.15 and 4.16 ended up proving both O'Brien and Bashir's speculations from DS9 5.06 correct, albeit not as solo guesses.

ENT has only some Klingon colonies afflicted, it never says or even implies it was the entire population. You can have a few million smoothheads out of the empire's billions/trillion/a crow of Klingons.
Exactly. Which is what the novels went with, and according to the writers they're not allowed to intentionally contradict canon, which means CBS (at the time) was fine with not every Klingon being smooth headed in the 23rd century.

This implies that any formerly ridged Klingons infected with the virus have been cured by the time of TUC.
It only implies that some Klingons have reverted to their ridged appearance. We don't even know how, whether it be "cured" or simply altered with surgery as Antaak supposed.

Agreed.

which has been completely ignored anyway in DSC.
Which quickly introduced its own set of oddities and inconsistencies.

SNW should have an episode in which a TOS Klingon, a TNG Klingon, and a Disco Klingon are all just chilling together. Really fry people's minds.

Anyways, since this is a ship thread, I wonder what new ships we'll get this season. My favourite original design from s1 (iirc there weren't a ton) was the Shepherd's ship from Children of the Comet. A unique, powerful looking ship without being too outlandish. I would have liked to get a better look at the Serene Squall.
