Game Star Trek Resurgence - new Star Trek videogame announced

I think I am almost at the end of the game. Portal 63 and the away team have beamed abord the Aphelion. I just started "Power Play". I am definitely enjoying the story. It is a very Trek story.

But I feel a bit bad for Bedrosian. I feel like I really gave her character a raw deal. First, when she was in the shuttle and we had to beam over the Alydians, I had Bedrosian stay on the exploding console to finish the transport. She got badly burned and blinded. Then I picked her to support me in the mutiny. She did and shot the captain. But then when faced with the decision to either bombard the planet or beam the crystals of Tkon onboard, I rejected her suggestion and beamed the crystals onboard. I just felt it was the starfleet thing to do. I could not commit genocide of the Tkon remnants. But she is furious and gave me the resignation speech. I selected the "I still need you" option.

I was able to get past that pesky DNA part by going to that room directly and not interacting with anything on the outside before it.
Now, I'm on the shuttle trying to avoid the stupid ligthning which destroyed me several times... the shuttle piloting is less than ideal.

Well, I've had an easier time with Resurgence over the last couple of days. I've figured out the transporter minigame, and gotten past it multiple times. It was frustrating for a bit. I still see some choppy cutscenes. The game needs a patch.

Overall, from a story standpoint, I'm enjoying it. There is one thing that bugs me. When you beam down with an away team they just seem to stand there. There's a science officer, but you're the one using the tricorder, and they're standing there. I get it's a video game, but still even A Final Unity had the TNG crew point you in the right direction.

I'd still give it 7/10 for night now.

I've managed to finish the game - stayed up until 8am as I was engrossed into what was happening.

Solid story, but, the background music was really unpleasant for the ears at various points and not very fitting (I half suspect they may have used AI for making the scores for the game - and a very weird one at that).
Because of the way the music was 'weird sounding', at multiple points I was reminded of Talosians from Discovery for some reason (works for minor things, but not most of the time)... but overall, yeah, not a very good choice of bg music for the game (maybe they could fix this in one of the patches?).

Other than the bad choice of bg music and some bugs, the game has a pretty decent story and overall gameplay.
I think it could have done with a bit more polishing in that regard - make a better looking station for the start of the game, improve the graphics there too and throw in some shadows as the Resolute did not seem like it was getting any shadows on it.

Any idea what ASYY means and what vortals is?
When I google these, ASYY turns up nothing - I presume it's naval repair parlance - and vortals either means "website" or "vertical portals".

Things turned out even less well with Bedrosian for me...

I also let her remain at the console on the shuttle, but I trusted Urmott with the info on the captain. The level-headed operations officer who could potentially lock people out of the ship's systems seemed the best option at the time.

Like you, I also beamed aboard the Tkon crystals. No genocide on my watch. And then Bedrosian's breaking point... I saved the suffocating Tkon before their ship blew up. During the end monologue, it was clear she'd at least left the ship, if not outright stuck to her resignation from Starfleet.

I also saved the Tkon suffocating before the ship blew up. I wanted to role play as what I thought a Starfleet officer would do. They had surrendered and were begging for help. It is not the Starfleet way to let a surrendered enemy die. Starfleet is about saving lives, even if they were your enemy. However, I did destroy the starfleet ship that got bioformed to Tkon and attacked the Resolute instead of crippling it. Admittedly that was not very Starfleet of me. But the ship was 100% Tkon and attacked and almost destroyed the Resolute. And I knew that once they are bioformed, they can't be changed back. I also did not want to take the chance that they would somehow still try to attack the Resolute after being crippled. And they did not surrender. Rules of war dictate that if the enemy surrenders, you have to spare them. But when I saw the suffocating Tkon on the Aphelion suffocating and begging for help and they did surrender, I decided to show mercy.

^^^I don't know if being on the Epic store exclusive impacts on how well a niche game sells like a star trek game

I'd venture that it does. Money thrown at them for development can only go so far. One thing many don't consider about exclusivity is how it might impact the recouping of costs. By being on a single platform, they have one chance to make an impression, and once the reviews come in, if I were the developer, I'd be nervous about being exclusive. Much better to widen the exposure level by giving customers the choice of where to buy, increasing the income flow.

^^I have no doubt that being a epic store exclusive has impacted on this game in many ways, so i guess they gambled that they could money from Epic without the need to sell 1 copy, but the only flaw with that view is if they do not build up a actual consumer base for their games then they won't be around long enough to make and sell any, it is a catch 22 with these kind of exclusive deals.

Finished a first playthrough a couple of days ago.

Resurgence is probably the most Star Trek game I have ever played, which is a big compliment.

There have been very good Star Trek games before from a gameplay perspective, but they did not quite capture the essence of the franchise. The "Telltale format plus 90s-style Trek" formula really worked out very, very well.

It even has bad action sequences, you know, like 90s Trek! :D

Re: Bugs/Performance/General polish

Played on Xbox Series X.
  • Encountered just one bug in a bridge scene where two characters did not despawn correctly.
(hint: the Bedrosian and Urmott models in the closing scene on the Resolute bridge)
Other than that, pretty much no issues.
  • Performance was very even, no issues.
  • My main issue with the general presentation was the title screen / main menu, the Xbox version is lacking ABXY button prompts and looks very non-standard / cheap port-ish as a result.

I am pretty sure I encountered a bug when you have to collect DNA to fool the lift to go down to the lower level of the mine. I was in the room with the food. I had the tricorder out and moving around but it would not let me scan anything. I replayed the scene but this time, I holstered the tricorder when moving around and I was able to scan for all the DNA I needed.

REVIEW
Spoiler FREE

Just finished the game. Best Story / interactive Film of any Star Trek game, period. Especially since the dialogues are immersive and not streght by too much gameplay.

Played all Trek Adventures since 1992. Epic like Star Trek: The Final Unity, just with current graphics. That said, Graphics and gameplay elements might be the weakest part. Some textures are very shallow, others are good. Music is good, but not very good. I experience 2 crashes when going into the menu at the beginning of the game, but not later crashes or bugs. Maybe they fixed the menu-crashes already. Quite high system requrements for this game thought.

Minigames are mostly quite intuitive. Sometimes its like: No idea what to do, but not for longer then say 10 minutes to figure it out. Phaser fights are engaging, but not as good as a regular shooter for course. Played on PC with a mouse. Story mode availalbe if you fail a shooting/stealth/shuttle flight.

Story starts slow, even a bit boring at the beginning. It lacks the "sudden capturing event" most stories have at the beginning, but gets more and more exciting into the 10 hour game, once the main antagonists are revealed. There are a few twists, with enought foreshadowing to anticipate some, but not too obious to be boring.

Sadest thing is that decisions are not having as much impact as in Mass Effect 1-3. Just watched other playthoughts, but there are some characters that die or not die, depending on choices, as well as different good/bad endings. So playing it at least a 2nd time is a good idea.

Still going through it……one question and maybe my Trek lore is fuzzy. The Captain mentions Admiral Hansen and Captain Shelby researching Borg…….who is Admiral Hansen? Can’t be 7. Is it a mistake or a character I don’t remember.

Admiral from “The Best of Both Worlds”.
