Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

Picard gives him a speech about names not being important, he gives a slightly sarky speech about names being everything. It’s a build up to the name of the ship, but it could as easily worked for him. It’s on point with the stuff around Sevens name, and even Locutus, and would signify a break with him going from most-wanted to new ensign. Thematically it would have worked, and been a final end to the arc started in Generations. (Ironically with Thomas Dekker in — I wonder if he almost got the Jack role.)

I mean, okay, but all that seems rooted in patriarchal ideas about the pre-eminance of a father's name over a mother's. One thing I appreciate about PIC S3 is that Jack does not take Jean-Luc's name, because even if he has accepted Jean-Luc as his father, he's not giving Jean-Luc a place of prominence over his mother.

Not really. It’s rooted in the story as shown. (For a start, he’s not Jack Howard is he?)
I am sure they considered tying it far too neatly in a bow — here’s the USS Picard, and here’s the whole Picard family. Beverly included.
There’s that seam of ‘last of the Picards’ going right back. Heck — if they wanted to have their cake and eat it, Laris should be right there too.

Lots of cultures on earth do things in all sorts of ways, even now — and there is nothing wrong with taking on husbands/fathers name, as long the choice to not always exists. I would suggest also that the passing down of a name for some is a key part of family bonding. It’s certainly more complex than either ‘shouldn’t take the man’s name’ or ‘must take the man’s name’ at any rate.

I agree with @Sci on this, I don't think him taking the Picard name would have sat right with me. He's been a Crusher all his life.

And from Picard's perspective, Jack was named in honour of his friend, so changing to "Jack Picard" would have undermined that.

You know, with the bad Borg all gone and the only Borg remaining being the Borg cooperative guarding that singularity after having requested to be members of the Federation, we could potentially see people wanting to become assimilated into the Borg cooperative (like people who are dying and want to live a long time) and maybe even see Borg drones joining Starfleet.

Oh I’m not saying I would have preferred it.
I’m saying at that point, it makes narrative sense.
And speaking has someone who has been through a bunch of names, and arguments over names, related to my parents divorce, I understand the situation probably better than most — the reality here is, *if* Jack did choose to take the Picard name, it *would* make sense.
Especially with the ‘names mean everything’ and ‘nepotism’ speech. Because he can’t be trading on the legendary name of his biological (who is now… a synth… ) father if he doesn’t have the name. No random crew member is going ‘oh! Like Jack Crusher the first officer of the Stargazer?’ Whereas namedropping Picard is more likely to get a reaction that would be some kind of nepotism.
The ‘Jack Crusher’ like Picards friend — a.k.a also Beverly’s first husband — would still be there, because his name is Jack. If anything, it would tone down the weird borderline gothic thing that is existing there as is. Deanna thinks her hands are full with Data — Beverly is gonna need a lot of sessions too. Twenty years on the run listening to Picards logs, naming her new son fully after her long dead husband… there’s a lot to unpack there.

Shuttlepod show interviewed Jonathan Frakes he had interesting things to say about directing and acting some of the shows for season 3 and talking about filming the finale poker scene was really good. Next week Levar Burton will be on the Shuttle pod show they're hoping to get more of the Tng cast to interview on their show.

[Nu-Borg-Co-Op-Queen Jurati turns up during the moment the Ent-D is battling the Borg Cube, and says in her most Elaine-voice: ‘ I’m sorry, no spare squares… not a square to spare!’

Jurati runs away from the Borg ‘cubicle’ laughing - leaving the crew of TNG banging on the doors…]

;) Wink!

Edit:

[End scene with Captain Seven-of-Nine seated on bridge of the newly ‘minted’ USS Enterprise 1701-G, with her bridge crew waiting for her to expectantly give the order…

Meanwhile Picard sits in his shuttle, and bemoans ‘But, but, but, I thought… it was gonna be called the USS Picard?!?!?!’

Audience Laughs riotously as camera pans out on a crest-fallen Picard, hand on the shuttle window…

Camera cuts back to Captain Seven-of-Nine, who swings around in her chair, stops dramatically - turns to the camera, flinches, raises one eyebrow and in her best Kramer vocals, commands: ‘Giddy-up!’

Audience laughs and claps, as the Ent-G jumps to warp.]

I’m here all day people… :D

I hate saying this, but the fact that I can make a parody of Season 3 without changing the dialog -- and by only adding a laugh track -- means it's not exactly as "perfect" as some might think. I happen to like it, but putting it on such a high pedestal would be a mistake.

No, they'd go, "Oh, as in Admiral Crusher, thrice head of Starfleet Medical who cured everyone of the Borg virus?"

In our world, maybe, but Trek leans towards mainly Doctors hearing of Doctors, while everyone else hears about scientists and captains. Jack has already jumped from medical to Command track for some reason.
