I read an article that said they digitally altered the actors eyes and mouth area to enhance the makeup/prosthetics.
Apparently, Nimoy had extensive dental work done the week before they started filming TMP and it radically changed his facial appearance compared to how he looked in TOS.

So it was necessary to do digital post work for the two different scenes from both eras.

Its really an accomplishment of what they did... though my main problem with this is that the tugs look nothing like UFP designs, and they use CABLES (as opposed to tractor beams).
Its like the VFX team knows little to nothing about Trek - hence where inconsistencies arise most likely.

Now, tractor beams are FAR superior to cables because they can be projected over a larger surface area of a vessel (which distributes the stress induced on the hull), and they can also project a low level subspace field and forcefield to the tractored object (reducing its inertial mass which would make it infinitely lighter to move and preserving structural integrity).

So, my main issue with this is: 'why wouldn't SF just send 1 Nebula and 1 Excelsior class starships... or just 2 Intrepids to tractor the saucer right off the surface of Veridian III and and Warp it to the Fleet Museum?

But yeah, I definitely agree the VFX dept. made it look like SW ships were doing the lifting... and WHY the extra installations around the saucer?
    That just seems... unnecessary.

Its one thing if SF wants to tidy up the saucer's crash trail, but again, for this, there are likely easier and faster methods (such as beaming piles of rubble to cover up the crash tail).

When I initially watched the video, I assumed Spock was done through some kind of CGI deep-fake technology. To find this out is quite amazing; the resemblance is very striking.

    It all makes sense now!

That was really something to see. Roddenberry.com. I never heard of it, but I’ll check it out now that I know that it exists.

From what I've read elsewhere on the forum it is a lookalike with prosthetics and CG replacement eyes to match Leonard Nimoy. It's very well done regardless. The TMP spock is especially mind-blowing.

    Yup

Star Trek already has had several Tractor Beam Tug Ships that have over-sized/powered Tractor Beams for their size.

They didn't use any of them.

Hell, I would've taken the Section 31 based Tractor Anchor thingies that we saw, with multiple anchors attached to the hull and multiple Tractor Energy Lines, that would've been something.

    But they had normal cables.

Lack of understanding of the Star Trek's world tech.

The cables aren’t under tension from what it appears. The one furthest over on the right doesn’t even appear to be hooked into the saucer.

Given who is producing these shorts, saying they have a fundamental lack of knowledge about TrekTech is an astoundingly arrogant and frankly stupid assertion

One way to justify the tethers, as well as the work platforms on different sides of the saucer, is that the crash severely damaged the structural frame of the saucer to the point of it not being space-worthy. The old TNG technical manual claimed a saucer that had to perform a crash landing on a planet's surface would be unusable even if recovered because the damage to the structure would be too much to repair and make space-worthy.

Therefore, maybe just trying to tractor beam it out wouldn't have worked because the stresses would be too much for the damaged frame, and it would have buckled and came apart trying to drag it into orbit. So that's why Starfleet had to do repair work on the ground, reinforce the frame of the saucer, and maybe have the tugs tether it up into the atmosphere before it could be tractor beamed out.

    There's some headcannon speculation lol.

Spock was not a deep fake. Spock was recreated using prosthetics and makeup applied to actor Lawrence Selleck.

I stand corrected then. That was a VERY good makeup job. To the point where I thought some of it actually was Leonard Nimoy's likeness.

This makes me wish Paramount+ would greenlight these people making some "TOS Movies" for Streaming. I think they could capture the type of thing I'd want to see. Specifically, I wish they'd finally make Planet of the Titans or adapt the unused Phase II scripts. Before someone rains on my parade: I can dream.

    It's incredible, isn't it?

I won't rain on your parade. I would love to see a revisit of Planet of the Titans or Phase II scripts even if it is limited to shorts.

I wouldn't mind seeing Planet of the Titans done. What little I know of it, i have for some reason thought it would be a great alt-star trek done anime style.

Meh. Doing little vignettes is very different from telling a full and complete story on that scale.

So how short do you want it to be?

YT Shorts length of < 1 min?

    Maybe call it "Side Treks"?

It's pretty mind blowing what they will potentially be able to do one day. Turning the animated series into live action? I'm so down for that.
