Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

I can't get past the scene of Riker blaming Picard for their imminent deaths and throwing him off the bridge back halfway through the season. Then he forgives Picard when he should be asking Picard to forgive him. The whole thing was out of character and disturbing. Did it make sense to anyone else?

It makes more sense if you think of this as a soap - it's common soap behaviour.

They really leaned into ALL the soap opera clichés with season 3. "Main character has a kid he never knew about" is another classic soap opera trope (or at least one that soap operas use HEAVILY). At least they spared us a "the previous two seasons were all a dream" moment although they sure inserted enough retconning to almost make them look like one, lol.

Riker was angry and scared and lashed out at Picard. He didn't necessarily "forgive" Picard he just spoke to Picard normally again and told him to make peace with his son.

No. Especially since Riker's character in the first episode and his relationship with Picard was wonderful. "I love you, but I don't work for you anymore and I can and will speak my mind."

It was part of a big bucket of moments that were "drama for drama's sake".

That was the moment that I felt really sorry for the crew of the Titan. "Crap. Three people are supposedly in charge and none of them know what they're doing!"

IIRC this was right after "There's a Federation citizen in danger and we must protect him!" "No, we can't put the crew of the Titan at risk." "It's my SON!" "Ohhhh! That's different!"

The show got better but that mess was a low point.

Yeah, wasn't all that right after Riker had told Jack about his family and after Picard said he wasn't interested in trying for a relationship with Jack? Then immediately after all that happens they all think they're going to die. I think we're suppose to think Riker is mad at Picard because he doesn't seem to care about his son while Riker wishes he could see his son again. Plus if he dies, then he's never getting back to Troi and their daughter again and that was when he was on the outs with her and he's sad about it. That's why he's willing to leave the Titan to just die in the next episode instead of running so his message to Troi would be found.

It's obviously extremely soapy and just drama for the sake of some drama lol but I feel like that's what they were going for motivation wise more or less.

I'm all for it. Just keep it off the bridge of a starship, especially during combat.

Even in the JJ movies you could be taken off the bridge for those sort of high jinks.
